Cool September 19 Mineral Wells Super Gymkhana / Drift Day!

Saturday, 9/19/09, Mineral Wells Airport, Mineral Wells, TX.

We are doing it again folks! This time will be a little different and hopefully even better than last time.

As always, any car may enter, provided it passes a simple tech inspection to ensure the safety of the drivers and passengers.

This day will be both for Gymkhana runs as well as drifting.

Gymkhana starts at 9am and will last all morning until about lunch time.

After lunch, around 1pm we will switch to a drift course and drift all day until just before dark.

- $50 to drive all day, this covers both the gymkhana and drifting sessions.

- $10 for a Ride-Along band. This wrist band will entitle you to ride-alongs with other drivers (per their consent). No passengers are allowed on course without one of these.

- Spectators are always free!!!

- HELMETS AND SEATBELTS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL DRIVERS AND PASSENGERS! If you don't have a helmet, you may be able to borrow one, but you absolutely cannot drive or ride along without one. No specific type of helmet is required. Any helmet you feel safe in is ok with us, but don't cry to us if it doesn't protect you well enough in the event of an accident. Darwinism is in full effect. :P

Hope to see you at the event!

That's AWESOME. I would so totally go, if I wasn't in the Northeast.

is this the parking lot that destroys tires or is this real airport tarmac?

Wow... how many events like this do you get the chance to go to around here? And you wanna complain about the pavement? Just FYI, how long your tires last here depends on the tires as well as your driving. One of my very good friends bought a new set of Federal 595's (fairly cheap) for his modded 240sx drift car and drifted on this same "tire eating" pavement at mineral wells for 3 whole-day DRIFT events on the same tires before they needed to be changed. Also, there will be a limited supply of FREE used tires at the event if you're not picky about what rubber you roll on, and a tire mounter will be on site mounting your tires for you for only $10. Seriously guys, there's no excuse. Let's just drive and have fun.

Let me rephrase it for you...

How many events can you go to where you get to destroy your tires AND your transfer case AND your clutch AND your transmission AND get so many rock chips that you'll cry yourself to sleep?

These "gymkhanas" are not for AWD vehicles.

If you want to do a "real" event this weekend there are better choices for an AWD vehicle IMO.

ETA: I did an autocross at MW last year, and Evo_Someday and I both drove my car. At the end of the day we'd taken like 20 runs. My tires (Star Specs) looked like someone had taken a cheese grater to them. It sounded like I was driving on jeep tires all the way home. And you all have seen the rock chips that my car has all over it.... and the cone scuffs. But this event doesn't use cones for everything does it? There are barrels... which will leave more than a cone scuff.

I am glad to see that someone is putting on gymkhana / drift events. I think the concept is very cool and I like that the style is being kept alive and well.

If I didn't need my Evo for daily driving and had a set of OEM wheels and spare tires I would do it because I admit, it looks like fun and worth trying at least once.

Perhaps another day...

who cares about how bad the pavement is on tires for a drift event? isn't the entire purpose of drifting to destroy the tires?

Wounds heal and chicks dig scars. =P You can have a "show" car or you can have a car that is DRIVEN and it shows. I prefer the latter. If you're scared to chip your paint, don't go to events like this, or any race, auto-x, or other driving events for that matter. Just rub your car with a diaper and lock it away in the garage and go look at it every now and then and think about how pretty it is. I drove my Z back from California when I bought it and got plenty of rock chips just driving down the highway. I could care less, because my car is not a show car. Its driven hard and put up wet, because I like to drive more than I like to look pretty. You can also break your car drifting. Then you can learn to fix it. If you like to drive, then come on out and have some fun, learn something, and improve your driving skills. There will be several skilled drivers there at the event who will be doing ride-alongs with other drivers and giving tips for improvement if you desire. If you would rather look pretty, sit at home and watch TV while we have a blast driving our cars. And ask Ken Block if he cares about rock chips on his car.

yeah...i got my car for show

who are you anyways? you dont even know what we do with our cars...and if you think its nothing because we dont "driiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiift" well...i guess we do nothing then. every time i park my car in the garage i get a baby diaper and wipe all the water off. i dont want my paint chipped so i guess ill just stay at home and watch Tokyo Drift.

and dont know anything about how my car works...hell i cant even change a spare tire...thats what we have Kevin for....

and like red evo 8 said....Ken Block doest pay a cent on that car...infact they pay him to drive it....good try at an analogy though...

let me guess u have a 240Z primer paint job?

I'm sorry but you guys are a bunch of DICKS. This guy just posted it up for people that would like to come out. If you don't want to do the event then F@#k @#$ event don't do it but there is no reason to bash on the guy. Everything here lately turns in to a pissing match. As for Ken Block he does spend money on his car. He is the owner of DC shoes and they are a big sponsor of Team Subaru and Rally America.

a diversified accounting system. he "pays" for it but not really.

DC is owned by quicksilver and with income like this
Revenue ▲ US$2.362 billion (2006)
Net income▲ US$107.12 million (2006).
i dont think a $60,000 car is a big deal....

and i a dick because the army made me that way.

and i was not a dick 1st i just asked a question.......then got a dick response...

but maybe that response was not aimed at me...but it is the interwebs so who cares.

I'm being a bit of a dick because this guy is calling people ****** because he thinks we're worried about rock chips... when the issue is that we're worried about $2k clutches, transfer cases, transmissions and tires.... not to mention barrels and other gimmicky ****.

I normally don't post on these threads, but I had to try and set the record straight as to what an event like this can do to an AWD car. If you notice, on DI, where I'm the moderator of the motorsports section, I NEVER say a word about these events.... because there's other types of cars there, that this event caters more to.... but here? This is not an Evo friendly event.

To get more on topic, I hear that you're taking the "reverse" section out of the course... that's a good idea.
