you can get a mobo with a g45 chipset which will do streaming of LPCM. it really depends on what you want to do. if you are watching dvds, it's no big deal, it's when you get into high def stuff that everything goes to ****.

there were supposed to be some standalone audio cards coming out that took care of this as well, but they all got pushed back (from what i've read, the beta samples were completely ****ed up).

thank god for copy protection! it makes everything better. the funny thing is you can send the high def audio unencrypted right now, but if you want to send it encrypted and have your HT receiver decode it, you can't. that makes no sense. it's about as useful as CARB.

speaking of receivers, clubonkyo had the 805 on closeout for like $499 if anyone is looking.

Well the HTPC would be for organizing stnd def DVDs, music and surfing the web. I would like to integrate high def but it seems like more of a PITA then anything else. What are you using for computer input? Composite, HDMI, DVI?

hmm that sucks the 46xx doesn't have hdmi... there might just not be a board available with hdmi on it... that is more of a board manufacturer issue than our chip. the 46xx just came out, so i dont think allt he board are available yet

i have a dvi-HDMI adapter that i hook into my receiver and then i do audio over toslink. you have to be careful with this configuration because some receivers don't like mixing audio sources with hdmi inputs (pioneer does allow it). you could get a dvi->composite as well and go that route.

i currently have an 8800gts w/640mb (i think it's MSI). when i upgrade (probably in the next week or two) i can definitely cut you/greg a good deal on it. it works perfectly for blu-ray except you get std def sound. most people probably wouldn't even notice the difference, tbh. it's been around long enough that i'm sure there is linux support for it as well. will trade for electrical work you could always go with a separate sound card later for high def audio if you really want it.

i've tried using the analog outs (which aren't downsampled) and i can hear a difference on my setup, that's why i am trying to get the high def digital outputs working.

the 48xx come with some special dvi-hdmi adapter that combines the vid and audio signals, whereas the 46xx don't (at least according to newegg's descriptions). i've read that they will output over HDMI, so maybe you have to buy the adapter?

i found a 4850 for $179 on newegg, so that may be the win. i was going to shell out that much for a sound card, so if this gets me to the same place, then so be it. the 4870 is another $100 and isn't necesary like you said (it also draws a lot more power and makes a lot more noise and makes a lot more heat).

All this computer talk is reminding me too much of work.

Anyone know where to source a cheap PSI gauge and tire stem for a boost leak tester?

NVIDIA drivers responsible for nearly 30% of Vista crashes in 2007

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/27/n...crashes-in-20/

That said I have an 8800gts running vista and I get constant driver related lockups anytime I play any game in windowed mode running at 1920x1080 (40" Sony KDL40W4100) with media center open watching tv.
