Actually you are supposed to do compression tests with the throttle plate open.

However, if there is that much of an inconsistency, that cylinder is most definitely bad.

The big thing is to figure out why it went bad- the biggest thing I'd look for is to see if the wrist pins come out easily when you pull the block apart. If they don't, it's a good indication the motor was knocking.

Good luck!

Yeah I forgot about the throttle plate.

The thing is the car has been sitting for almost a year and a half and has only been started a few times recently, would it be possible for the rings to "unseat" because the car hadn't been turned on in so long?

I don't have incredibly high goals for the car in terms of power so I'll prob just drop in some new pistons/rings or maybe even rods and pistons/rings while the motor is still in the car.

thats not always the best indicator as some are pressed in by heating the piston. id look at the rod bearings extremely carefully with more attention to the top shell.

I would truthfully drive it, get into some light boost and then redo the compression test. The car should be warmed up and the throttle plate open. Don't try to speculate on a faulted test.

If you are really going to do a big power build i would pull the motor and do it right. Oh and make sure you address the balance shaft or all your work is a potential time bomb, ask 1slowevo.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

I don't plan on making too much power right now, if I do I'll definitely get it done the right way

I realized the maf was descreened and the stock intake had a nipple attatched to nothing on the underside so I just picked up a new maf and put a little rubber cover over the open nipple, hopefully that helps a bit.

My boost leak tester (I was lazy and bought one with a gauge built in for $23 bucks), tactrix cable and tb seals should come in this week so hopefully that'll help me pinpoint the idle issue.
