i totally disagree turk... i think having a dedicated set of autox wheels is a great idea if you are really going to get into it. i like the idea of separating my autox tires from my street ones... the autox tires are going to get beat to ****. plus like you said it opens up the possibility of going to R compound.
i plan to feel out a couple events... if i still feel that i want to get more into it then i plan to get a set of wheels/tires just for autox. the rpf1s also really do not cost very much $$, especially compared to the cost of rubber which will be getting eaten up quite quickly. between their weight savings, added functionality (having dedicated rubber for autox) and low cost - seems like a big win to me

I agree, if you are very serious about it running the best tire for the class is key. If you are lucky enough to run in a street tire region - being in say SM street tire index can still be a very competitive game.

I have the Dunlop Star Spec's on my summer wheels now in 235/45-17. I was initially thinking if I got the Enkeis for autox - I'd start with the Star Specs again in 255/40 and possibly go to an R compound down the road. If I went with the wider Star Specs, I don't think it would be that different than my DD wheels/tires... but I really like the idea of not having to worry about them being too bald/f'd for the road due to hard autox use. I figure a set of Star specs would probably barely last a single season of hard autox use. Hard to tell though since I'm still very new but your experience seems to confirm this. I also drive quite a lot and I'm pretty positive if I autox a lot and don't have a second set... I will be ordering new tires halfway through the summer.
I really need to look at the rules more pertaining to classes if I'm going to get "more serious" about it.
I guess in the end its going to come down to how much I am going to autox which hopefully I should get a feel for after one or two events.

I was going to get a set of those tires to use on the galant since they're on closeout right now. But then I realized I need to find a set of matching rims first...

EDIT: just noticed they are on closeout for 139... thats a ridiculous price for those tires in 18's! Go for it! The Bridgestones have a much stiffer sidewall (TWSS) i believe.

I think if i stick with the BBSs i will be getting the Nitto NT-01s as my next tire in stock size. They are about $140-150 a piece and i have heard really good things.

The Nittos are wicked hot. Not only are they are sick tire, but they just look plain bada$$. For that price, I would definitely try them! They are probably better than the Star Specs (same grip and stiffer sidewall I bet). I seem to remember someone thinking I was an idiot for wanting to run NT-01s on the street but I forget who it was lol. It was probably Davids just wanting to give me a hard time lol.
I wanna say when I got my Star Specs the Nittos were over 200... there was definitely a significant difference in price though. I think I paid 133 a tires for the Star Specs in stock size.

NT01's should not be driven on the street. They are magnets for dust/nails and will sand blast the side of your car - plus, dangerous if they blow.
255/40's will have more ultimate grip over the 235/45's. I always recommend running street tires then moving up to r-comps. You learn much better control and skill on the streets. R-comps can hide mistakes...basically, in the long run, you will be a better driver for it.
