After poking around and doing some homework I am almost positive that it's the shifter linkage. I'm not paying a shop to do the work but I'll be damned if I have any real idea what I'm doing in there. Should prove interesting.
(I think I should take this as a sign and get real about getting rid of the Evo & the damn Jetta)

Doc, do you have metal shifter bushings? My buddy cory had the same/similar issue. It ended up being the solid underhood bushings needed some lubing. Mikie can also help in that department.

Mike, I have the Buschur shifter bushings that were installed when my trans was rebuilt in April. If Mr Mikie wants to help me look I would be eternally greatful and gladly repay him with some C.B. goodness.
Problem is, car is stuck in my nice cold stone driveway.
EDIT: I cannot remember for the life of me what the bushings were, or if they were under hood bushings or what, but I think they might be metal.

haha i was joking about mikie providing lube.
Remove your battery, there will be shifter linkage under the battery.
Step 7 pic on bottom right corner. the two black donuts are the shifter linkage. Make sure those are moving properly

It's been one of those day, so I fell for it without thinking. Thanks for the link, I will try that tonight. Hopefully I have light left when I get home!

The buschur racing ones are aluminum I think. I have them on my evo but I'll be switching to poly ones from works (took 2 months for them to ship it to me) soon. The metal ones are nice but require lube as they tend to rust and corrode from the conditions up here.
I would suggest switching to the poly ones, I had the same problem in the lancer with them rusting in place and shifting being sticky. If they're stuck they're also a ***** to get out too... Just be careful with the linkage cable, you don't want to bend or put a kink in it.
