when an 02 sensor fails, 99% of the time, they are designed so that they read leaner than they really are and cause the car to run richer. (you could imagine that the opposite would be very bad).

it could be your front o2 sensor- mine in my subaru died (i guess they don't like high egts or something) and it was all over the place. even at a steady cruise, it would hunt and do crazy stuff.

it should pretty much always read 14.7:1- it's lambda sensor so no matter what fuel you throw in there, it should always read 14.7:1 which is 1:1 as far as the sensor goes.

if you let the car idle for a few mins, it should settle and not keep moving around (unless you have a leak somewhere). i've found the best thing to do to test the sensor is to cruise on the highway at constant throttle. if you afrs bounce all over, it could be a bad sensor.

the trims may move around from tank of gas to the next, but for a given tank of gas, they should be consistent.

hope that helps.

The AEM was fine when I first put it in...running solid 14.7s at idle/part throttle. Then MA went to ethanol fuels and it got weird...reading more lean for a time, then more rich...I'd say for the past 4-6 months it's been sweeping through the 14-15 range at idle...

I'm wondering if that weird sweep is a result of winter gas? maybe the car's not appropriately compensating? And now maybe it's back off of winter gas?

Like I said, I'm confused.

And yeah, I'm on the stock O2 housing. And no codes at all...havent popped a code in over a year.

I feel like the front O2 sensor doesn't bounce around as much as the AEM, but I don't know how much averaging is going on.

For the first time in months, the AEM stopped bouncing around and hunting...but now it's pretty well settled on 14.2, idle or cruise.

mine bounces around a lot even at idle. I might have a leak though on the turbo inlet, i will have to check it out.

Mikie-

I think I may come by friday. Since the lugs are here, I know Paul S. will want his and you will want yours. So, I was hoping to come by and do some exchange of parts for currency while having an ale. Let me know if this is do-able this friday.
