255/35 =
Paul, you will not regret 255/35/18 on a 18x9 wheel. It is the best size. Rubbing will only come into play on your decision for wheel offset. More aggressive offset and you will be fender rollin. I am currently running 255/35's on Kevins [inphluence] old wheels. And those are 18x8.5 +30 and look like flush. I'm only rockin these wheels until my secret set come in from Japan and they are 18x9 +35. Only 120+/- days to go

Paul,
Here is a helpfull hint. I have a setting on my tire fitment guide here at work in my tire catalog program.
Outside diameter measurements:
Stock 235/45/17 = 25.3 inches (9.25 inches road contact)
245/40/18 = 25.7 inches (9.65 inches road contact)
255/35/18 = 25.0 inches (10.0 inches road contact)
A 255/35 will be your best bet if/when running a lowered suspension
Hope thes numbers help!!!

Road contact can vary depending on the tire.

Yes, you are correct. The wheels I chose came in +30 or +35. +30 I would have had to roll. So I chose the +35. I as well did not want to start modding the body of my car to run a certain tire/wheel combo. If this was all for race purpose, than I would. But its only a street car.

According to my trust tire calculator (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) the 255/40's are slightly taller then stock (60mph (speedo) = 61.7mph) . Before when i mentioned the 255's are dead on, it is on a 17" wheel (my bad).
Vulcan has the 615s (255/40) for $669 to your door. Like I said last night, retail wise, vulcan has the best prices hands down. I did a ton of looking when i bought them for my other car.
