Edit: so does anyone want to meet up tomorrow?

For the longest time, 900 degrees C was the magic number for EGTs. Now it's 1600F. I think we lost some headway in the conversion....
In any case, knocking is detrimental. Period. It has the potential of being more detrimental at higher temps, however, if you are decreasing your changes of knocking (less timing, more boost), then it should be a non-issue.
It's all a series of tradeoffs. Like Chris said- it would be really nice to have a cylinder pressure monitor. I think it would paint a very interesting picture.
At least on my Subaru, it would constantly run at 1650-1700 at WOT and nothing melted there. I would have loved to rip that motor open and see what it looked like.
This guy melted an EGT probe, so I am going to say he was absurdly hot., moreover, his alchy injection let loose, so he was running lean (on my 'conservative' amount of injection, I see AFRs drop .5-.7 points- some people see them drop 1-2 points). So i think there were a lot of factors at play.
There is certainly more than one way to do things. My view is that if it's consistent, then it's good. That's probably the most important thing to look for- if you do two pulls and then your car starts acting sluggish, then you have a problem.

Another interesting thought- there is a Subaru tuner, Jorge, who tends to run cars what most people would consider lean- 12s to high 11s on pump gas. People criticize him for bad tuning, but there are never unhappy customers that I have heard of. People just make unfounded remarks that it's not good. When you have an efficient system, you don't NEED to use extra fuel and timing.
Timing is a way to make up for poor VE. If you can improve VE, then you don't need timing.
