Maine Traffic Infraction Fines

For those of you coming up for the Maine Forrest Rally this week/weekend I thought I'd fill you in on the new speeding fines, just so you know what you're getting yourself into on your trip up here:

The guy I rent a room from is a cop and he brought home this list of changes (a supplement to what is already in place) and I thought I'd share:

FT = Failure to; rt= right.
  • FT produce evidence of insurance $159.00
  • FT display a current and valid certificate of inspection $122.00
  • FT obey traffic control device $97.00
  • FT stop for flashing red light $120.00
  • FT stop for red light $120.00
  • FT stop on red before rt turn $120.00
  • FT yield after flashing red light $120.00
  • Turning right on red w/out yielding $120.00
  • Turning rt on red where prohibited $120.00
  • Violation of red arrow signal $120.00
  • FT stop at stop sign $120.00
  • FT yield at stop sign $120.00
  • Speeding 1 -9 mph over limit $109.00
  • Speeding 10 - 14 mph over limit $126.00
  • Speeding 15 - 19 mph over limit $172.00
  • Speeding 20 - 24 mph over limit $201.00
  • Speeding 25 - 29 mph over limit $247.00
  • Imprudent Speed $109.00
  • Speeding 1 -9 mph over limit in school zone or construction zone $213.00
  • Speeding 10 - 14 mph over limit in school zone or construction zone $247.00
  • Speeding 15 - 19 mph over limit in school zone or construction zone $339.00
  • Speeding 20 - 24 mph over limit in school zone or consturction zone $397.00
  • Speeding 25 - 29 mph over limit in school zone or construction zone $487.00

Things to notice: they changed the first structure, it's now 1 - 9 mph and not 1 - 10.
Things to think about, the fine for shoplifting is only $100.00.

Also, Law Enforcement Officials are no longer allowed to chase persons on motorcycles.

30 mph over the speed limit is criminal (i.e. can take you to jail) which is much better than some states, like GA and NC 15 mph over speed limit is criminal, 20 in FL

Don't forget, the law in Maine is you've got to stop for persons waiting to cross in a defined/marked cross-walk.

Just remeber drive safe, have fun, and wear your seat belt.

I was up for the Maine Forest Rally 2 years ago (or was it last year?) working on the service crew for Eurosport Rally team. One of the drivers was "test driving" the rally car on the street and got pulled over. The cop was nice enough to let him off w/just a warning however!
