Friends of Portland International Raceway
Since 1961, Portland International Raceway (PIR) has been a valuable community resource for motorsports as well as numerous other community activities. Over time, it has developed into one of the pre-eminent race tracks in the United states and has been a regular venue for most of the premier U. S. professional races series. Local an national users alike have contributed to PIR's maintenance and enhancement and it has been largely self-sustaining. Its uniqueness comes from its convenient location within the Portland city limits and its city ownership. The latter makes it very affordable for users and also expands its utility to numerous groups unconnected with motorsports.
Friends of PIR are committed to the preservation and enhancement of PIR as a resource for those who use it, both participants and spectators alike; sustaining and expanding PIR's civic contribution as an institution in North Portland; providing guidance and support for the ongoing management of PIR in a manner that assures its ongoing value as a venue for motorsports and other diverse forms of recreation and entertainment.
Please read more about Friends of PIR and join us. Feel free to forward any of our information to your friends or organization. If you are interested in becoming a "Friend" of PIR, please complete the contact/signup form.

Attention all motorsports fans and participants, Sam Adams (Portland City Councilor) has taken a personal issue with PIR. As most of you may know, there has been a long standing feud between "neighbors" of PIR and the raceway especially regarding noise levels. Sam Adams is now a neighbor of PIR and become a very vocal spokes person regarding the impacts of the raceway on the neighbors. Don't pay attention to the millions of dollars being contributed to the local economy, don't worry that the closest similar venue is near Seattle Washiington and don't worry about the numerous events you each have either participated in or watched.
Noise is the door that opens to allow the termination of the facility. The adopted Capitol Improvement plan for PIR through the City of Portland's management has failed to be implemented for the past several years. Funds allocated to this facility have been redirected to other more socially acceptable needs. If Adams is successful in getting noise limitations, what type of racing will actually occur? Fight Sam Adams representing a small but vocal group of which he has a vested interest.
This post is to request you go to http://www.friendsofpir.com and register your support for the preservation of the track and its facilities. It costs nothing except a little of your time to fill out the form. The minorty gets heard because the majority shuts up and thinks everyone else will do their fighting. You need to be heard, your voice and vote counts!
Thanks for supporthing this organization!!!! And remember to pass this on to any person or group that you think is affected by the potential closure.

I'm trying to arrange an event during the first Day of the West Coast Import Tour with mark wigginton to help promote the www.friendsofpir.com website accross the nation -
my main goal for the future event is to show the public how PIR is an avenue for race fans in the North West to both spectate at Sanctioned events, and have a legal resource for people who might be tempted to Street Race instead of racing at sanctioned events... Basically put - 'You close the track, and instead of complaining about noises on the track (which has been open for nearly 50 years), we'll see the street racers taking to the street since they no longer have a legal race track to get their urge to speed out...' Mr. Adams would be therefore blamed for the street racing related accident/incident increases in the Portland area's if the race track is closed...
Getting the local law enforcement/ State police on board would also help the public to see the positive venue at the track since the police SUPPORT legal sanctioned events...keeping the streets safe, and preventing as many accidents as possibly is a greater concern than 'Noise Complaints'...
I'll keep things posted up here regarding our PIR event as the event schedule opens for the 2007 racing season.

Expect us to pull some strings through The WCIT 07 and get the info on how to save PIR out to the nation instead of keeping the word on the West Coast...
I'll post up something on here once we get something formally coordinated - I would hope that the event would be simple, and performance oriented over show.. but having a drag race and car show never hurt anyone... what would be even better would be us having the car show cars do at least 2 drags down the quarter mile... haha... that would be hilarious!

hey pdxralliart -
Hit me up so we can get a fund raising event rolling for PIR - not sure if you have any contacts up at the track, but if we could get a Subaru Vs. Evo Event scheduled for August 2007, then that would definately draw alot of attention from the Import communitee for PIR... Just an idea -
I've been getting alot of emails from people asking when an event like the 'englishtown suby vs. evo event' will come to the NW ... maybe I could get some contacts involved from the west coast to help make a big time event!...
hit me up if you're interested.
thanks,
Kory Noble
