Exhaust and emissions

Hey guys, I got a couple inquiries involving the install of my exhaust and bypassing emissions. So, I just installed my DC Sports Downpipe and Greddy Ti-C Exhaust over the weekend and didn't realize that the smartest thing to do was to get my emissions first! (Guess I was really excited and wanted to hear how it sounded) So now I have to either get it tuned and somehow pass emissions or re-install my stock exhaust (which I don't want to do because it took too much time alone to install my aftermarket one). Anyone got any suggestions on where to get a proper tune? and by a shop that can fix emissions so I can pass or at least waiver it? I know that if I attempt a $150 repair towards emission I can get it waivered by the state but I never done that before and don't know how to go about. Does anyone know where I can get a tune that is around the Northend of Washington?

Another inquiry, After the installation of my exhaust, I get this annoying vibration near the center of the car to my gas pedal, and its pretty loud and obnoxious. I don't know the source of where its coming from. I jacked up the car and looked underneath and the exhaust system clears and isn't touching anything. The vibration only comes from when the car is moving and around 2900 rpm. I tried searching but I only dug myself a deeper grave. If anyone wants to sit in the car with me and listen to try to help me fix it that would be great! Or if anyone had the same problem and figured out a solution, I could use that same information. I am pretty sure most people had the same issue when installing their new exhaust system. Thanks in advance guys and sorry for this inconvenience.

you said you installed the downpipe and catback? did you install a test pipe or keep your stock cat?

you get 2 chances to pass emissions and only pay once, i would try so see if your car will pass with the exhaust... if you fail and want a local tune, take your car to maxwell power in marysville. They have a dyno and can probably do a quick tune.

You could also try to just switch out your test pipe with the stock cat and you should pass

no cat means you will get resonance, that would be what the vibration is around 2900 rpm. you'll also get it dragging downhill while in gear when the engine isn't under load. just part of not having cat's

hmmmm. The DC Sports DP is a full DP with a cat delete, sorry forgot to mention. But thanks for the tip on where to get tuned. Do you think I can pass with no cat? If tuned properly? I heard from a co-worker that some places can tune to pass emissions, but I never tried for this is my first exhaust setup ever.

hmmm that makes sense since my setup has no cat......but is there a way to minimize it? its aggravating.

thanks guys for the reply

If there is no SES light or check engine light, you'll pass.

I did the cheater spark plug non-fouler mod and no SES lights came on after driving 75+miles or 30mins+. But there is alot of CO and very rich in smell.

If you get it tuned, then you will pass emissions just fine. Since our cars are newer and AWD, they cannot put them on the dynos at the testing stations. All they do is plug into the ODB2 port and rev the engine in neutral. If your car's ECU does not throw a code, then they assume that everything is working well. They did not put the "Sniffer" pipe in my tailpipe.

As for the vibrations, make sure that you are actually clearing in all conditions. In certain engine to suspension configurations, I was getting some rubbing on the coating on the sway bar. Also check that all of the heat shields are tight and not vibrating.

^ you're the one I've been msging on youtube about the vortex generator haha, nice video btw =)

@OP Also you could replace the exhaust hanger bushings and make sure nothing from the exhaust is touching anything on the chassis is important. Any touching will transfer vibrations from resonance and amplify it

That's exactly what the emissions guy did to my car, everything you mentioned is right on! Get tuned first.

Yup, just get a tune and you'll be fine. I passed emissions a couple weeks ago with a test pipe while thinking I had a high flow cat. The just plugged into my car, joked about "Fast and the Furious" and sent me on my way.

The dealer that sold me my Evo told me they installed a high flow cat so that they could sell me the vehicle. Last night when I went to replace it with a test pipe, low and behold there was one already on there! I guess I now have a spare test pipe

Andy,

Best tuner in the Pacific NW is English Racing, look em' up. However if I were you, I'd resort to tuning after more bolt on mods are done (IC pipes, FMIC, etc....). The rich smell is natural when running a catless exhaust.

Also for your rub, check your clearance under the car around your lower front subframe brace. After I recently switched my Buschur for an HKS exhaust, I developed a rub there. Im going to have the hangers on the exhaust shortened a bit to bring the exhaust a lil closer to the bottom of the car. Also check the heatshield in the "tunnel", sometimes that'll do it too.

Andy - I agree with Miguel - I got my car tested with some DIY tune the previous owner did. It will pass emissions only because it is allwheel drive and they do not sniff the exhaust.

maxwell power in marysville can tune your car just fine, i ran Doms tune on my car for years with no issues. He specilizes more in subbies but i s till recommend him if you dont have the time to go down to english.(can be quite the P.I.T.A if theres traffic) but they do specilize in evo's. As for emissions as long as you arent throwing any codes you'll be in n out real quick.

^ This, at least for KC. They don't even tail pipe sniff it, they just plug in the OBD2 reader and thats it.
