Audio System

Hey All,

New to the forum. Picked up a Outlander Sport SE in January. I've put it off changing anything up until now. I currently have the stock radio, not the navigation system. But I'm deciding to make some modifications to the audio system, I wanted to get some clarification before I spend any money. Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is the stereo i'm thinking about getting:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...on/AVIC-Z150BH

Does anyone know, if I pick up one of these, will I retain the phone controls, or just the radio controls?
Amazon.com: Axxess Metra ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface with New Micro B Connector (Black): Car Electronics Amazon.com: Axxess Metra ASWC-1 Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface with New Micro B Connector (Black): Car Electronics

This states 2011 and up, but Amazon disagrees that it will fit on 2013?

I've typically hooked up after market stereos myself in the past, but never put a new stereo in something this new. Anything I should be aware of before I start the install?

Welcome!

I just picked up my RVR in September and have a Pionner on order as well. Going to include a back up camera while I'm at it, just waiting for all the parts to come in now.

I plan to do a more detailed write up when I find some time to do the install after I return from my trip in Nov. Your parts list looks correct, although I can't comment on the ASWC-1 keeping bluetooth controls or not; I'm curious too, will advise later.

Just be sure to pick up a wiring harness along with the dash kit.

Thanks, I haven't ordered just yet, once you install if you could post if those phone controls work, that would be great!

My parts list for the stereo install is below if I buy everything I want is below... I may have gotten carried away....

I may also buy a sub but I don't want to take up much room in the trunk, thinking about a bazooka tube as well. I have a 1000 watt 4 channel amp laying around already that I could use, but its kind of bulky, so looking at a powered bazooka tube.

This video really helped me understand all this audio mumbo jumbo a lot better. What I want is to be able to crank up my speakers very high while having crisp clear audio without distortion at the same time. I want this without having those giant speaker boxes and according to this video, all I need are filters?

I actually considered the AVIC-Z150BH, but found the earlier model AVIC-Z140BH with really no difference. Not enough difference for me to pay another couple hundred dollars at least. I'm not sure what model was used to integrate the steering wheel controls, but I can assure you on the model I have, you are capable of using all steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth works impeccably well with the microphone mounted on the glass right next to the rear-view mirror. Not sure how big your city is, or if you have XM NavTraffic offered, but it is great to have it without having to pay extra, unlike the other two Pioneer navigation units we have on the other Mitsubishi's.

I'm also impressed with the HD Radio feature(your local radio stations have to offer it), with the clarity it provides. I like to listen to the local radio to hear all the events going on, or concert updates on the weekends, and listen to XM Satellite Radio throughout the week.

I also have the Pioneer rear-view camera because I can't stand the aimed down OEM camera the Sport comes with. Both cameras work at the same time when put in reverse, and having the split screen with the camera and navigation on, works great especially for blind spots that the side mirrors do not catch. You can see half the vehicle in the camera with the split screen option(Rear-View), and really helps changing lanes when you're on a 3-lane road merging in any of the lanes.

One recommendation I have is if you get the double din kit, which you'll have to, to install the navi unit you want, considering matching your interior. Ours has the Piano Black, so I decided to wrap ours with carbon fiber, with a Mitsubishi logo in the very center underneath, so it is raised when wrapped over.
Gives it really personalized custom appeal.

Good luck!

If our Outlander Sport/RVR already comes equipped with bluetooth can we not uses the existing MIC? Also what about the USB port and AUX in the glove compartment, will it still work?

It looks like you would just need the filters for the tweeters, and then you would just set the hertz on the deck for the mid range, and the hertz on the amp for the subs? I wonder if there is a filter already in place on the stock tweeters?

Thanks for the info, that really helps. I might try the carbon fiber look with the mitsu decal. Do you have any pictures that you can see the raised logo?

LunarFX, with the Z140BH, you're saying the steering wheel controls to answer calls also? And as wildarms asked, i'd be interested if we can use the existing mic/center console USB Aux ports?

No, there isn't.
I can confirm it 100%. (on 2013 models at least.)

I've already taken mine apart.

I really have no idea how to even begin to go about doing all this. What would be a fair price for a shop to charge me to do this for me?

I personally do not know how much it should cost. I'll probably carefully start taking things apart and figure it out from there.

From the video you posted, the bass filter looks fairly straightforward to install on the tweeters, once you get at the wires. With the stock tweeters installed above the door itself, I believe those you can just pull straight up on the little tweeter area and it should come off. I had the passenger side one actually come off on its own at one point. so thats where my logic is coming from.

No.
With our modern (OEM/Rockford Fosgate) automotive audio systems, they are all calibrated at the source (equalized at the headunit). The individual drivers (tweeters, midbass, & sub) are powered accordingly (individually - our amps are located under our passenager seat) and are digitally-"filtered" within the frequency range that they are suppose to perform in.

There's no need to passively filter our speakers (drivers) in this setup.

Side Note: Our stock tweeters are using 1" silk domes with neodymium magnets. Impressive. Surprised me to find such nice tweaters in our CUVs.

Wes,
You don't need to solder/wire-up your own passive crossovers. Modern Branded multi-channel amps usually have built-in electronic crossovers, all you have to do is to make sure you set the right cross frequency AND wire up the correct drivers to the right outputs.

Price would be the Cost of a good quality multi-channel amp.

Maybe its a stupid question at this point, but if I purchase the GPS/Navigation Ive been looking at, would I need to install these filters to keep the frequency ranges filtered? I have the SE, but it just has the 6 speaker setup without the sub, and the stock radio, not navigation.

There are no stupid question(s) here. Just hard facts & harder opinions.

But, in your case and IF you intend to use only this headunit to power the stock drivers you will need a passive-crossover (filters) setup to protect those speakers.

Or, if you get the wireing harness that can taps into the stock amp (assuming it's the same amp setup as the OEM Rockford Fosgate)... using the pre-amp outputs of this Pioneer headunit, THEN you won't need any filters.

Ok. Thanks again! If theres a stock amp id prefer to use it if I'm able to. I havent taken anything apart yet, ill have to go look to see if theres an amp and how that would end up working. I'm no expert but I prefer to install myself if I can
