Well I grew very bored with my interior, the fact that some of the trim peices didn't match. The majority of the interior is black, but yet some sections of the interior were a grey color. So I decided to paint them black and match them with the rest of the interior, enjoy.

Tools you'll need:
  • Exacto knife
  • Painters tape
  • Screw driver(Philips and flat)
  • Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric paint
  • Ventaliated area to paint/dry
  • Patience

1. First your going to have to remove the interior peices you wish to paint, I decided I wanted to paint my A-pillars, the peice around the foglight, the peice around the radio, and lastly the long peice that holds the clock. If you know how to already remove these peices then just skip this, if not then continue reading.

Remove A-pillars:

To do this you can use a flat head screw driver, simply place the screw driver at the top of the pillar and pull it back enough to get a finger behind it. Then slowly pull on the pillar while sliding down towards the windsheild, there are 2-3 clips holding it in. Don't be afriad to pull a bit, but remember this isn't the world strongest man contest.

Remove the peice around the foglight:

To remove this peice you are going to have to remove the plastic outline around the cluster. You will see two screws at the top, they required a philips to remove. Once you remove those that peice you will have access to removing the peice around the foglight. Simply pull the side, again don't be afriad to pull but don't go crazy with it. Once you've pulled the peice from the clips, unplus the harness connecting to the sidemirrors controller and the foglight switch. To remove the button/switch from the interior peice, you will need a small flat head. On top of the switch/button you will see a slight tab that is holding the peice in, slide the flathead in there to lift it enough to pull the button/switch out.

Remove peice around the radio:

The easiest one to remove, simply pull on the three AC knobs, they'll come right off. Behind the outside two knobs you'll see a screw, use a philips screwdriver and remove them. Now your going to have to use the holes from where the knobs were to pull the peice out. If this is the first time removing this peice you might have to tug a good bit, again don't go crazy.

Remove peice around clock:

Last but not least, after you've taken off the peice covering the radio you'll see two screws holding this peice on. Remove them with a philips screw driver. Now your going to have to pull from the left side and move to the right, go slow. There are a good amount of clips on this one so don't be afriad when you here a bunch of pops. Also don't rip it right off because the clock and hazard button are connected.

By now if you've followed everything as said your car should look somthing like this

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1874/img04945pz.jpg

2. Now that you've got all the peices out of the car you'll need to wash them, make sure the surface of the plastic is clean/dry so the paint will stick. I used some paper towels with a bit of soap on them, I ran the paper towel over all the peices and then dried them with a towel.

3. Time for the best part, painting. So grab your paint:

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1825/img04847ia.jpg

And find a nice spot you'll be able to paint in, I chose my driveway and I laid down some paper with a box, like so:

http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/8051/img04850fs.jpg

First we'll start off with the A-pillars, I applied 3 coats and let each coat dry for about 5-10 minutes before spraying the next one. The final result should look somthing like this:

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9707/img04878jh.jpg

Next we'll paint the peice around the radio, this is where you're going to need the exacto knife and painters tape. Since this peice has the climate controls on it, you'll need to mask them off so you don't paint of them. Take the painters tape and apply a peice over the circle, use your nail and press down to outline the circle of the climate control. Use the exacto knife to cutout the circle and leave it there to mask. When your done it should look somthing like this:

http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/5534/img04925hi.jpg

Now that you've got that peice masked off, we'll move onto the next peice, the area around the clock. On this one you need to turn the peice over and you'll see that the AC vents/clock are all one peice and screwed on. Simply get a philips head and remove the screws:

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/2503/img04962ik.jpg

Now it's time to paint the rest of the peices. For these peices I only did 2 coats, I didn't feel the need for the third and they came out very good IMO, here they are:

Before:

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/4594/img04955hb.jpg

After:

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/4821/img04971co.jpg

That's pretty much it for the painting section, you can clear the peices if you want them to shine a bit. Although I didn't want that because none of the other peices have gloss. I let the peices all dry out for a few hours before putting them back into the car.

Now once you've put them back into the car it should look somthing like this:

http://img302.imageshack.us/img302/3720/img04996lz.jpg

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/5297/img05002sk.jpg

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/4607/img05030ey.jpg

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/7872/img05050fv.jpg

http://img302.imageshack.us/img302/3057/img05075gx.jpg

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/7396/img05086af.jpg

http://img314.imageshack.us/img314/8379/img05105vp.jpg

I hope this writeup helps, if you've got any further questions please let me know. I'd be more than happy to help {thumbup}

I did my A, B, and C pillars and even done the hazard button

sgand Oct 8, 2007 05:38 PM

Awwwww man, now I want to do this. :D

I did my last car, and here I am 4 years later and it looks like complete sh!t. Good thing I sold it.

I just don't want to run into the same problems down the road with cracking, chipping, peeling, yada yada.

sleet Oct 23, 2007 08:59 PM

Wow, I haven't been on here in FOREVER. I've been wayy too busy but everything is still holding up and I haven't had any problems with my paint at all.

jdmrally Jan 12, 2008 08:05 AM

hmm, did you just use the vinyl and fabric paint? I tried that too and the first time anyone reached for something they scratched it. So I went back and started cleaning it with acetone, Then I went back, sanded it down w/400 grit then 1500grit, applied an adhesion spray, 4 coats of Black Vinyl and Fabric Spray let dry then 4 coats of clear let that cure also, then before we installed it we wet sanded with 2000grit. It took us a little more than a week, but it last so much longer, you can scrape up against it without it causing damage. I even dropped a piece on the concrete and it didn't do anything :-)

Getting the headliner out of the car was a PITA but it came out great. I'm hoping to get some pics up by this weekend.

pics?

robyn402 Feb 2, 2008 06:20 PM

evo_domination Feb 2, 2008 06:42 PM

detroitmuscle Mar 11, 2008 06:58 PM

waiting for the update?

colburn22 Mar 19, 2008 03:46 PM

just did mine and I love it

igo4bmx Mar 19, 2008 06:26 PM

did mine too but the black doesn't match perfectly with the rest of the interior

mikespike2 Mar 20, 2008 10:57 PM

I saw an evo with a radio surround that was black and matched the rest of the interior texture wise, asked and he said it was stock. Now I'm beating my head trying to find the year/model that had it.

Jameson_IXMR Mar 21, 2008 12:33 AM

Those of you doing your headliner, it is more effective and cheaper to just re-wrap it in black cloth from a fabric store. It wont look spotty and peel either.

SpeedJunkyz Mar 29, 2008 06:57 AM

what about the pillars where the seat belt mounts are? If someone already said this Im sorry I just didnt feel like rooting through several pages lol

NightCat Apr 9, 2008 06:19 PM

Like the guy above me, does anyone know how to get the B columns out?

my friend and I started painting the A columns on his Evo today..unfortunately the cold weather caused it to crack as it was drying so we're probably gonna wait off to fix it until the weather warms up a little..or maybe we should sand it a little first or something to make the paint stick better..

most of it turned out alright, except for right down low near the tweeters.

edit: oh yea, and for those who dont think flat black fits right..we used a charcoal instead and it matches a bit better.

EcrsEvo May 12, 2008 05:02 AM

i wanna see headliner pics!! oh and we need directions on how to yank off the B/C pillars too... thanks!

jutilat May 16, 2008 12:55 PM

My seats are done. Looks very nice. Got rid of that blue.

You have probably figured it out by now, but I know the stock '03 OZ lancers have them.... I put mine in my evo out out of my OZ and it looks a lot better!

mitsuboost30 Jun 25, 2008 08:29 AM

i did this and it looks excelent im just looking for a good suede (alcantra) material to do to the headliner to complete the look!

kevinoffroad4x4 Sep 6, 2008 02:12 PM

well i started to do my interior and i made a couple passes of pre-spraying to get the paint up to the nozzle which all went well.......then i started to paint my pieces and the can started dripping and spattering everywhere. so now i am at the step of removing paint and trying again with another can that actually works correctly. hope no one has to experiance this....it was a big let down

used2havahonda Sep 8, 2008 09:06 AM

Sharkbite2000 Nov 2, 2008 04:25 PM

That looks real nice !!! Great job!!!

captainA Dec 7, 2008 07:41 AM

looks good, did u sand them first?

TRIPODSSIKEVO9 Dec 9, 2008 01:54 PM

I have done the A-pillers, C-pillers, and both roof light trims. I will be doing the roofliner and the "OH S*@T" handles.

I dont quite know how to take off the B-pillers.

As far as the C-pillers are concerned, You have to take out the rear seat. Once you take that out, you will be able to just pull the C-piller out. You have to take out the rear seat because the back part of the seat will prevent you from pulling out the very bottom clip that holds the piller in. It only took me about 5 minutes to take out the seats and pull out both pillers.

I could use help with the B-pillers if anyone can do a write up about that...

I am using the Dupli Color and the paint is coming out very nice. I did this a couple days ago but have not installed yet. I am wiating to install when I get the B-pillers out and painted.

TRIPODSSIKEVO9 Dec 9, 2008 03:43 PM

Okay. I just figured out how to take off the B-piller. It is a lot easier than I thought. All you need is a 17mm socket and a ratchet.
1. Take off both front and rear kick panels. Just pull them off.
2. Pull off the bottom section of the B-piller.
3. Pull off the front cover to the seat belt. You will se a 17mm bolt that holds it in place.
4. Remove bolt and the seat belt assy. comes right off.
5. Pull out and up on the upper part of the B-piller
and Viola... The B-piller is removed.

Hope it helps.

TRIPODSSIKEVO9 Dec 9, 2008 03:59 PM

Something else...
If you are looking to paint, the slide that is behind the B-piller just pulls right out from the top, making it a lot easir to paint.

SRTRaceR04 Mar 20, 2009 11:33 AM

I don't know if anyone else has made any other suggestions on the interior paint, but I will say the paint used by the OP is OK at best. It scratches very easy and that's kind of a bad thing on some of these parts.

I used the same paint as the OP for my interior and noticed how much it scratched.

I decided to try out another paint and went looking for something suitable. I found this:

http://www.yourautotrim.com/satinblack.html

Pretty soon I can post a picture comparison. I tested the SEM paint on the visors in my brother's 92 Civic and a few pieces in his TT Supra. They look GREAT and seem to be much more resilient than the paint originally suggested by the OP. It sucks that you have to order it and can't just pick it up at Advance or something. But I think it's a much better interior paint.

80210 May 7, 2009 02:52 AM

I'm getting my headliner redone and so I painted some parts black if you take a piece of tape and put it on there, then pull off it removes the paint!

I sanded too! Perhaps I will try to use primer although I thought I wouldn't need it on plastics...

Any input would be great.

Greenspeed Oct 16, 2009 10:29 AM

This is awesome, i did this about 8 months ago. Really helpful guide :D

mobilman Sep 2, 2010 02:23 PM

I'm doing mine right now... looks good so far

mifesto Oct 28, 2010 08:07 AM

i did mine roughly 6 - 7 month ago using duplicolor vinyl&fabric paint flat black. painted hvac surround, the long dash piece, shifter base and small switch surround on left side. i didnt use adhesive promoter but i did lightly scuff surfaces with 1000grit paper then used Dupli-Color's Prep Wipe to get as much dirt and hand grease off of it. then hit it w/ one coat of primer then about three coats of vinyl paint. no chipping or cracking. seems to be very durable. love the look!

when the winter hits im sure ill get bored and do the steering wheel next :)

ct9asilver Nov 18, 2010 07:02 PM

To the people saying the paint scratches easily, its because almost every plastic interior part is POLYPROPYLENE, which does not accept 90% of the spray paints available and cannot be dyed after it has been molded, if you look on the back side of your plastic pieces I.E. the pillars, it has a [PP] mark, which means POLYPROPYLENE, I have used KRYLONE FUSION which is formulated for this type of plastic.

On a side note, you can dye the two little plastic sunvisor clips black with RIT color dye, and also the sun visors, the two light housings unfortunately are also made of polypropylene, so again a specialty paint is required.

Polypropylene (Herculon, Olefin) is dyed while still in liquid form, before it is extruded into a fiber. It cannot be dyed at home.

dude nice jop. il ike it

mr0072003 Mar 10, 2012 12:01 AM

Bringing Threads from the dead back to life.. Did this today.. Used same paint as in the instructions. I did however sand down both pieces with 800 followed by wet sand with same grit, (MINUS HVAC panel, I just got the DD JDM one) and then washed and then painted... and it looks good. Here are some pics.
