IX RS Build
#363
I'll start off with saying, that's one nice looking build!
I don't know much about drag-racing cage construction rules, but if you can spare the extra weight, you might consider adding a bar to beef up the middle part of the cage. The way the cage looks now, I'd suspect in a roll-over, the top of the cage would deform too easily. You've got good triangulation up to the harness bar, but from your pics, I can't see any triangulation going on above that (i.e. where your important bits are hanging out...your head & neck). If your rearward bars were straight back to the strut towers, you could add a triangulation in that plane, but it looks like they bend before heading down to the rear floor pan. Based on that, I'd think your best bet is probably to add a bar going from the bottom passenger side to the top drivers side in the vertical plane right behind your seat.

I'm assuming that they have less worry of roll over in drag racing than in rally etc.
Plus Brian said all it needs is the chute mount and for the certification guy to give it a legit inspection
And thank you Brian for being very open and honest about the glitches that need to be worked out!
Best of luck once again this weekend!

As far as i can see it looks to be up to par for the NHRA specs w/ the new for 08 "D" bars and it's got the 8 necessary points and i don't think they require any further triangulation in the bars from the main hoop back down into the turknk but i mau be wrong.

I had a friend who raced in a rally car that was built to minimum safety specs. The guy was involved in a head-on (while driving the car on the streets...i.e. not during a race) and his passenger got crippled. If they had put the bars in that most were using at the time of the build, there's a good chance the guy would've come out of the accident unscathed. I'm not sure if you're ever planning on driving the car on the streets, so I just figured I'd mention it.

Fair enough, like I said, I don't know much about drag racing cages. I've seen drag cars roll over before, so I was just surprised that there wasn't any bracing to maintain the integrity of the upper part of the passenger compartment. Obviously you're doing a high-caliber build, and it sounds like you're on top of all the regs.

Not 100% sure that it is the head at this point. Could be anything really.... I'm hoping it is the electric water pump set up or something ridiculous.

Brian almost missed this post, bizzare i decidded to read it and it pertains to the event i have organized with the help of manny people and yourself.
So i am really hopping you and the team can sort the issue out, however i wanted to say thanks becasue you are still hopping to run the car @ the Wynn's / Jestr the 7th, and thanks for at least trying to be there to showcase the car so everyone can take pics i am sure the community will love to see.

you are right. It is one of the baddest cages built in the us. The cage builder is very reputable and it is built as needed. There is nothing to do but call the guy over. They only look at welds and thickness. Its a non event. As for the car, not sure what to say. I have always been up front and honest. It is what it is. It will be fixed. I am still shooting for the Dec 7th event even if I have to make my first est runs there and on the red with no stock turbo testing. I can always go back for that later. Time will tell. I may even borrow some parts just to go. Or at least I and the car will be there, just not running. That is obviously my last resort. But if all else fails I will still show my support and will be there in person regardless...
