Interesting. Can I ask.. does the Haltech have knock control? I've been curious about that recently. Maybe crispeed can chime in and explain the benefits of Haltech over Autronic, Hydra, PowerFC, Vipec, Motec, etc... would love to hear the opinions.

The new Platinum Sport Units can monitor knock but do not have knock control.. Crispeed may need to chime in with more info if you need..

We are sending the Shep Ultimate Ratio trans back to shep for rebuild.. There will be no dogbox in his setup since brian is wanting to drive his car on the street now also..

Yeah, NO Dogbox. I havent needed it and cant justify the cost right now. It will go 8.70's without the BOX

Thanks for chiming in Mike. I just leave the tech to you and Crispeed. I know I never have to worry when you guys are on it... Mike says Haltech, I say lets do it I am considering driving the car again on the streets but still not sure. Thats not the main reason behind no dogbox, I just dont feel I need it yet. I can rebuild my Shep trans 6 times for what 1 db costs. And my Shep trans has performed flawlessly.

Bumping this just because there is so many options out there I'm curious why Haltech was your guys choice.

Hey Mike and Most wanted, at what power level do you feel the need to swap to a dog box? Around 900 like mikes gsr or is that for when he makes more power later?

Haltech was our choice because Crispeed has been working them for 19 years.. I trust his judgement.. I have seen with my own eyes after using AEM how superior haltech is.. Startup & idle is night and day difference.. Not to mention the constant bugs and fried AEM's.. Also dont forget quickest Evo to date running 7's uses haltech also..

The dogbox isnt really based on power.. We have used it with great success on 780hp and 920hp.. If you can flat shift your car wide open then the standard trans is still good..

Ok I see. So its not a problem of power stripping the gears. Just if it will shift fast and smooth. For a car that is going to be shifted a little slower (a mile car) 900 should not kill the trans. At least not every time. Sorry for the OT.

I think you can run 7's with a carb and distributor too... and choosing Haltech cuz it is better than AEM isn't saying much.

Anyway I guess it's the usual, "it's what the tuner is used to" argument. I've seen so many Evo's switch ECU's when they switch tuners because the tuner has a preference. In the process they toss a perfectly good ECU.

Mike since you're at the forefont of the Evo aftermarket world, I'd love to see you guys actually find what is the best ECU out there for your customers and use that. If Haltech doesn't have knock control, and Autronic, Vipec, Hydra and PowerFC do... is it possible for Haltech to be a superior choice in terms of reliability?

Just think of how many AEM's have been installed on Evo's in the last 4 years. Is that because it is the best ECU? Or is it because tuners just stick to what they happen to know?

I was just throwing it out there about the evo that runs 7's.. I realize you can run 7's with a VPC & GCC...

The best ecu for our customers is the ECU our tuner beleives in and has helped develop for 18 years.. Our tuner Crispeed doesnt just tune Haltech.. They call him when there are things they want worked out and tested..

I can run any ecu i want including Motec.. I beleive in Crispeed and he beleives in Haltech.. That makes it the best solution for US and our customers.. AEM is known for MANY MANY issues i wont even get into.. SPend some time on supra forums with the guys making 1500-2000k HP and see what they say about expereinces with AEM.. I dont need my customers having those bad experiences.. I just sent back a failed ECU to AEM which they said was " OK " when they tested it.. Funny thing is the car wouldnt prime the Fuel pump or start the car .. we unplugged it , sent it in and received back " Unfixed ".. plugged it into the car and cranked.. Once again proving they dont want to admit when the ecu has issues..

Was recently said by someone at AEM whos name i wont mention.. Dont quote me cause i forgot exact words .. " We never thought the aem would be used as it is today.. it was designed to pnp for near stock cars, not what people are doing with it today "..

The reason I beleive 99% of the evos on standalones are using AEM.. Because its EASY to tune.. Again i dont tune i am going off what i have been told by many AEM tuners.. Haltech will slowly make its way into the Evo market, trust me.. The new platinum series is much more user friendly than in the past and superior to AEM..

Dont get me wrong here.. AEM has its place and does work.. Alot of cars have gone fast with it.. Depending on the setup i dont mind doing AEM for customers.. Im not saying to abandon it.. It has its place.. Its easy to tune..

Mike
