I got both on eBay. Mitsubishi does not sell just the shaft. Some smart guy figured how to build them and sells them on eBay.

The knob shaft breaks because the older gears bind easily. Do yourself a favor and buy the $27 revision kit that comes with gears, cable, and knob. This will remedy the issue for good. My heater knob is now butter smooth.
