Lightbulb DIY MIVEC Head Conversion - Crazy Idea

Ok so I know the easy thing to do is get a IX MIVEC head, but they're very hard to find right now. 4-8 heads are a lot easier to come by.

Has anyone ever converted a 4-8 head to take the MIVEC equipment from the 9?

I've seen some threads of some people doing it to DSM heads, but there's not a lot of information.

I do need MIVEC for the very specific build I'm doing, and I'm having a hard time tracking down a MIVEC head. I would also enjoy doing a DIY modification like this. It would be cool to have it documented.

Any thoughts?

If anyone would know how to do it, it's Kiggly Racing. They did the original DSM head, but stopped offering the parts to do it because nobody could do it properly.

Thanks for chiming in! I have reached out to Kevin about this, and we haven't gotten very far in the conversation, I know he's a busy guy so I don't want to bug him too much haha. I thought maybe some EVO guys would have some ideas!

there was a HKS kit to retrofit mivec to non mivec engines, but that involved custom cam cover with oil valve and some additional electronics..... Cams were custom too...

Oh that sounds interesting! I googled it and found it, it's the HKS V-Cam System. looks perfect! It also looks like it's very rare to find haha so potentially the same boat.

Anyone have a line on where to maybe purchase one of these kits?

In the past 15 years, I've seen maybe one V-con setup for sale, and it was in Japan at least 5 years ago. It was massively expensive when new and had very few takers, plus you'd be locked into an HKS cam profile, which are very mild.

I've seen an Evo 3 in Sweden or Finland (Evo 1-3 are the same as DSM) with cam phasing on intake AND exhaust, but I'll be damned if I can find it.

Oh man that sucks. I found some on a couple japanese sites and they were over $5k USD, so that tracks with what you're saying.

That is interesting about the evo 3! I'm gonna have to look for that. Thanks!

Just keep looking for a 9 head. It'll be less expensive than anything custom.

I see one on eBay right now for $2,500. has valves and springs. Is that the going rate for a head these days?
