Harris Hill Road Drivers Event (San Marcos, TX) - April 5th

Though some of you might want to drive the new track in San Marcos. I went last time and had fun; scared the crap out of my instructor, but I considered that a compliment.

Here's the email I got:

I just wanted to let all of you know that I will be holding another DE
at Harris Hill Road on April 5. It will follow the same format as
last time, though it will be a little less expensive this time: $150
for S2KCA members, $160 for nonmembers. This will include breakfast
and lunch, as it did last time, as well as skilled instruction for
those needing or wanting it (required for beginners and novices).

Registration will be open to S2KCA members only until Feb 19, at which
time it will open to the public. These events have become popular and
registration is capped at 52 cars, so hurry if you want to attend!
Registration is at www.motorsportreg.com.

Thanks, and I hope to see you all out there!

Sondra Sondregger
South Central regional director, S2KCA

Does it have plenty of flat runoff space with no concrete barriers to run into? hehehe. I don't know how well I trust myself. But anyway.. I kid.

Looks like a good opportunity for those from ft. Hood, Killeen, Waco, Temple, Austin, and Corpus Christi areas. As well as for those in West Houston as well such as Sugarland and Katy, etc.

Probably a bit far for me though since I'm in N. Dallas which would be 250 mile drive each way.

There are only concrete barriers near the pit lane. Everything else is dirt run off (but I was not one of the ones kicking up dirt).

People have commented that this track is more technical than the others in Texas. There is a decreasing radius negative camber turn that everyone was worried about (especially my instructor sitting up high on a stock suspension Evo ). Actually, that picture is me entering that turn. Challenge also increases from the elevation changes and blind turns.

Would that mean maybe it's not the best track for a first timer?

They welcome first timers. They will have instructors and put first timers in groups.

You push your car as hard as you want within the limits of what your instructor will allow. That's how I scared my instructor a little. . . It was my first DE and this track is new. So he didn't know me or this track.

We were going down hill on one of the straights. I was building up serious speed, especially going down hill. I know my cars capabilities pretty well and went a little hot braking into the turn at the bottom of the hill- right at the limit before ABS would kick in. I was braking in a straight line and didn't lose control, but it certainly startled the guy. He did that reflexive "oh sh*t" hands and feet flying up to the dash in an effort to somehow stop the car. I felt bad (but at the same time a little flattered that I could maintain control while spooking him) and drove like a granny for the next few laps.

Having driven Harris Hill on all-season rubber, I can say that it is probably fine for a first time driver. There are two spots on the track that'll cause you to think a bit, but my recollection is that both were safe as far as run-off goes. I might have to see if I can swing this as my new ride will be properly broken in by then.

mrMTB, your car would be broken in by the time you got there

There isn't any autocrosses in the area that weekend The issue is the drive home will be grueling after a day at the track. I'm a zombie on the way home from MSR.

Looks like I waited too long as its full. I was really hoping to get some track time at HH before the HH Evo meet in May.

If you see a WW X going off track on 5/8 its probly me.
