2011 North American International Autoshow

Anybody heading down to Detroit for the North American International Autoshow in a couple weeks? I know in recent years it wasn't as good because manufacturers were pulling out when the economy was bad... but it looks like most of them are back now.

lol... I don't think you have to worry about getting shot. They know how important this event is to the City. The COBO Center is actually really nice. I can't lie tho... the rest of the City does look pretty gutter. Just don't decide that you want to go see Eminem's hometown or something... because they you might get in trouble. lol

I think this is the first year in a while where it'll be worth going. Most of the manufacturers are there (even the Chinese)... and they are bringing new concept cars! I think one of the ones people are looking forward to most is a 600+hp Porsche concept which nobody seems to have any ideas on what it is yet.

If anybody is planning on sleeping over there... I hope you looked after hotels. I booked one in mid-December for myself... and I checked now for a friend who also wants to come down... and the room rate went up by $20 a night.

When I was there a couple years ago... I didn't have any problems with people. But it was very obvious that the city was run-down. Don't think I'm gonna go anywhere touristy people wouldn't go tho. I saw the road sign for 8 Mile Road exit on the highway tho... lol

I will be there, most likely on Tuesday afternoon during the public show week.

As for Detroit, you're not going to be in any danger you pansies. The main downtown area is both safe and pretty nice, a lot of things to do and good restaurants. Cobo, Joe Louis Area, Ford Field, Comerica Park, and the casinos are all in the same general area.

If you need parking, I recommend parking at the Greektown structure then take the People Mover (Detroit's 99% useless downtown tram) over to Cobo. Much nicer than trying to find parking at/near Cobo and doesn't require much walking around in the freezing weather.

Can you recommend stuff to do while in the City? My friend wants to go go-karting for some reason .

There's karting in the north suburbs - http://www.kart2kart.com/

In downtown Detroit there's restaurants and casinos. If you head out on Woodward towards the Ferndale/Royal Oak area, you'll find an assortment of bars/clubs/breweries/etc. If you want a really active nightlife, you could make the hike out to Ann Arbor (about 40 minutes from DT Detroit) AA has a huge nightlife scene thanks to U of M.

If you want some cultured **** (isn't that what car clubs like? ) there's the Detroit Institute of Art, a really good art museum with a large collection.

Or you could drive around downtown and explore the ruins and urban decay. The old train station is cool to check out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_Central_Station
