MAP Turbochargers Update / Now Featuring Proprietary Step Gap Piston Rings
Nothing too ground breaking in this update, but we thought we would share the news about this innovative little piece nonetheless
The turbine piston ring is a circular spring steel alloy that is used to provide a dynamic seal between the turbine wheel and bearing housing. This seal relies on the turbine wheel design to keep oil away from the turbine housing as well as exhaust gases from entering the bearing housing assembly. (1)
Conventional rings utilize a straight gap configuration for ease of manufacturing and installation, but by design these rings leave an open path through the gap for oil to reach the turbine section potentially resulting in smoke, oil consumption, etc. Our new step gap piston rings prevent the aforementioned scenario from occurring resulting in an extended service life.
