help?
Because with a 255, you get more contact patch without much change in total diameter. A 245/45 is a good bit taller. You don't want a taller tire for good handling, it throws off the speedo, and it looks pretty crappy (if that matters to you). I'm not sure why it would be appealing to get a tire that is closer to stock. Can you tell me why you'd want to do that if you're having to purchase an aftermarket set? I would want to get the most tire I can get.

I would love to know anyone who would not want the skinnier sidewall. Remember, the tire height number (e.g. 40) is a percentage of the tire width (e.g. 255), so a 255/40 is not necessarily "skinnier" than a 235/45, but a 245/45 is DEFINITELY fatter (taller) than a 235/45.

thanks for the tire expertise.
I was always under the impression that a 40 series no matter what size it was that it was skinny like you see on the rice burners running around. I rode in a few and don't like how they ride. So good info.

Anyone have pics of an evo with 255/50/17's at different angles?

Do you mean 255/40? 255/50 would be ridiculous.

There's lots of pics and tons of threads talking about 255/40s. 40 is not even skinny. You're talking about 30 profile tires or lower, but even then, that number is just a percentage of the overall width of the tire. Think about it for a sec. If there's a Honda ricer with big chrome rims but only a 205/30 tire, then the tire height will be very skinny compared to a 285/30, which happens to be the size I use for my race tires...

Here's the only pics I have...

255/40 RT-615 on stock BBS rims (rear is jacked up):

While doing a rally-x:

Before an auto-x:

Now, my 285/30s. As you can see, they are skinny, but not super skinny like ricer tires:

I stand corrected boss man! should have dug a little deeper on the 555's

I feel the same way about the Advans vs. Nitto - This is a street car so I am looking for a little more tread life.....I guess I can give up a little grip.....we'll see....

....understand about the 245/45 ratio too, but thanks for pointing it out....I was looking to fill the wheel wells a little too so I thought this was a good size.....I was going to go 255/40....maybe on the next set.

....since it will only be a few short months before its time for new rubber, maybe the RT-615's will get the call for the next set...

.....hopefully my "weak" tires will not let me down.

Sick speed, 245 is the width, so that doesn't affect the wheel gap. It's the 45 profile, which is a percentage of the overall width that makes it taller and fills up the wheel gap more, but that's not a positive thing, unfortunately.

There's a LOT of info here on EvoM. You said you didn't see much?

Lots more, but that should have been enough to save you from buying such weak tires...

Only a few months? Why?

My car is a daily driven street car, too, and I do not buy my street tires for tread life. It depends on what's important. When I'm on my Blizzaks in the Winter, the handling and traction are horrid - I hate it.

I liked my 555's. If you look at the tread compaired to the Advans.....they are very much alike. Now if only the temp rating was the same......

Well......I am guessing that I'll clock another 15K-20K miles over the next 6-8 months, and then it will be time for new tires.

I wish I had gone 255/40 like you suggested - I was talked out of it by the the tire supplier....should have gone with it any way.........

RT-615's 255/40-R17 next time around....maybe sooner if I can negotiate a return!

Thanks - Sick Speed
