9sec9 R&D on personal parts..any interest?

As many of you know, I'm always trying something different. I'm currently on a mission to resolve an issue that we've had with the rear diff on our OKIX car. One of the failures directly related to the spider gears in the diff. The ring gear and pinion were fine. To resolve that, I've asked an outside source to quote me a price on a spool. I'm going to get 2 of them for myself, but not too sure if any other 'hardcore' drag cars are interested or not. Obviously, no-one is going to run something until it's proven and tested, but I'm only looking for potential interest in this particular setup. Has anyone already tried it and if so, what were the results? No idea of cost at this point. Doing it myself is the only way some of these things will get done. I would also like some input concerning using a spool in the rear, but leaving the front original. Gear ratio's will stay the same, since the ringgear and pinion stay original. THIS IS NOT FOR THE STREET! DRAG ONLY for those comments that relate to street use.

does quaiffe not make a differential for the rear? By going with a spool there is a danger of snapping an axle and the one wheel still spinning and maybe causing you to loose control of a car thats potentially going very very fast.

Tom, if you plan to keep the front open, I belive Shep has or is in the process of having something made up to lock the center diff also.

You car with a spooled rear end and center diff would be a 60' killing machine!

Thanks Jeremy. I'm not sure what will be needed up front. Trying to find out myself. The goal is to launch as hard as we want without worrying about the 'little gears'.

Thanks Scott. We're looking at all ideas of 'solving' the problem. A new idea by the Professional who builds many, many, many highend racecar rearends is in the works. PRI is coming up, so right after that's over, we're back on track. Thanks to Buschur Racing and my R&D guru, Indy for helping me get to the answer.

I might be interested we would have to talk some more. I have been talking to a couple guys from the pro's and they had some very interesting ideas. Theoretically its not a problem with the integrity of the gears themselves infact they are up around 1200ft/lbs of static torque handling i believe that was on the rear diff anyway i have things written down somewhere. Anyway back on track.. Its more of a side deflection problem causing the problem.

Now your situation did come up in the conversation. Kind of interesting how it basically decided to explode every which way from what i remember. There is a fix out there "well what they believe to be a resolution to the problem for a rear diff" but of course kind of hard to test it till next season.

Yeah, Chris. Thanks for the input. When the current idea is built, we'll be putting it in one of our rear diffs and trying it out. From what I understand, the housing it'sself is strong. I'll be posting up here on our progress.

Indy, don't let them pull any information out of you. Yes, R&D to us is not just talk. We're not GONNA TEST something, then forget about it. Just because there's crickets chirping doesn't mean the forest isn't full of beasts. We have aero, POWER and durability parts being developed. Indy sits right in the middle of all of it. I'm just the recipient of his talents. We talk every single day, sometimes 4 or 5 times a day. Things are progressing nicely.

Update: Spool was built (10 of them) and put into our rear diff, our spare and currently finding it's way into a few other cars. Al (Dynoflash) just put the spool through it's paces with full launches on an HTA88. 1.5x 60's and not a single problem. It appears as though we found a winner. Thanks to Al for running the new spool. 9's at 150 is a pretty good test.
