Best car purchase I had at Riverside Mitsubishi
i had my car for a while now, but i've never posted my experience here, so i guess i'll do just that.
keep in mind, that before my purchase, i had excellent credit.
to start off, i'm in socal, so selections of dealers are wide. i can choose one approximately every 20 miles. that said, when i decided to purchase an evo x, i started making the rounds and calling for estimates for a RR evo with SSS package.
after making some calls and determining which one has the possibility of offering me the best price, i started visiting the dealers and initiated talks. at the time, the dealers are literally empty with no visitors, so getting a deal with my level of credit shouldn't have been hard...
here's my experience with all dealers within a 75 mile radius, and why i ended up with riverside . keep in mind, for every dealership, i wanted $35,000 SOLID OTD, no strings, all fees/taxes included. one more dollar and i'm walking out. i always bring a laptop with me with all dealer info i gathered, so i don't look like a sucker walked into a death trap.
puente hills: they're after your money, and nothing else. has no idea how to treat you as a customer, sales reps are morons who don't know anything about an evo. i initially walked in because of an e-mail response from a online sales rep, but when i arrived he wasn't there, so i had another sales rep on the floor help me out. i was able to get a test drive in an x without second questions, so that's at least a plus. while i was test driving, i asked the rep, just to test him "so...does this car have lsd?" he looked at the car's spec sheet on the window for like a minute...and then says "i don't know." i almost laughed but of course, i feigned ignorance and said "ok, sure." after the test drive, he gave me the damn 4-square trick. (for those that don't know what it is, google it, there are guides on what that is) i said "sorry, no 4-squares. you know what my credit is, and i want $35,000 OTD. i believe it's reasonable, don't pull my strings, please." he walks over to the manager's desk, talked for a minute, and came back out. he gives me ANOTHER ******* 4-square, outlined the payment terms, fees, added options i don't want, etc. etc....and the OTD price? $36,578. i said, "ok, we're done." right as i was about to leave, he was like "hey, what about a ralliart? we can fi..." before he even finished, i retorted "what the ****? did i ASK for a ralliart? sorry but i'm not coming back again. i'll import a jdm rhd evo before i buy one from the likes of you."
glendale: even worse than puente hills in my opinion. two things - first, barely anyone there speaks proper american english. i'd say they're russian judging by their accent. now don't get me wrong - nothing wrong with being russian. i'm just guessing. second, they tried to sell an x to me, with my exact options, for $37,000 OTD, and wants $10,000 down. i thought "you've got to be kidding me." the owner of the dealership came out as i was about to leave, and sat me down again. guess why? no, it's not to give me a better offer. i even told him puente hills gave me a better offer with zero down. he says "why does it matter? 37, 36, it's all the same when you have zero percent." i was flat out mad at that point, and said "do you take me as someone that can't use a calculator? you have to understand - i used to be a math major, and the difference between your price and puente's is about $1000, not to mention the difference between zero down and $10,000 down. why do you treat me like a sucker? is that how you treat all your customers?" guess what he said: "what are you talking about my friend, you're still getting zero percent, and that's why you're here!" i realized then it was a huge waste of time, so i walked out, another sales rep chasing me as i walked into my car, trying to get me back into the dealership.
huntington: i called their sales department over the phone, and eventually ended up with a sales manager named tim. pretty friendly guy over the phone at least. he said, after waiting about two hours before he calls me back and see if he can meet my requirements, said "i can get you what you want, 0 down, 0 percent, rr evo x brand new with sss package, for $35,700." he sounded like a nice guy, so i didn't want to verbally abuse him like i did with the other dealers, so i said "let me think about it...$35,700 wasn't what i asked, but if i have no other options i'll get back to you." which brings me to...
riverside: called there, got a sales rep named henry. i gave him the details, and how much huntington is selling it to me for, and if he can match it to what i want. he said, "let me ask my manager, and i'll call you back." 15 minutes later, the dealership owner, mark, called me, and said "oh yeah we can match it easily - $35,200 OTD, exactly as you want it." i was going to push him a little and bring it down to $35,000 OTD. so i said "let me call you right back." so i called tim at huntington again, and after another hour, calls me back, and says "we can give you something around $35,200 OTD as well, so why don't you visit us? we're closer." he has a point, so i said, "ok...if riverside can't match you, i'll come over." before i hung up, he said "there's no way anyone else can match it, don't miss this offer, i bet you riverside can't get you that offer in writing" blah blah blah. called riverside, and mark said "give me a minute...*a minute later* i'll match your offer - $35,000 OTD." i was like "OOO...maybe i can match it with tim...think you can get me that in writing mark?" then he went on the offensive and said "no no, i know this game - you're trying to haggle. if you want this price, come over before we close tonight. i dare you to come" i said "ok, i'll call you."
(at this point i thought, maybe that's a low as i can go...and he dared me, so damn...)
called tim again, he said "he can't get it to you in writing huh? i bet you he will jack up the price once you go there. so why don't you come over? i can give you $35,200 OTD in writing. what do you say?" i said, "hm...i'll take my chances. if i don't get the offer from riverside, i'll come chat with you." he seemed confident, and said "sure, call me and we can sort you out if you can't get the deal, which i'm sure you can't." after work, i drove almost two hours through traffic, and arrived at riverside, 30 minutes before their closing. right as i arrived, henry walked out and said "you must be the guy on the phone!" i thought "wow i see business is booming huh." went in, and talked to mark, which was a bit surprised - he thought i wasn't going to take the dare and drive two hours over. BUT turns out i'm standing in front of him now. so he said, "good man! i thought you weren't going to come! $35,000 OTD - it's yours." filled out everything, with my good friend present (he's an accounting manager, so looking through invoices and forms are his specialty). he found nothing wrong, the ownership form says "$34,999.98" ...so hey, i even saved two more cents! the finance manager was also very friendly, and even said "don't worry - we said $35,000 OTD, and it's on the paper. not a cent more." filled out literally everything in a measely 15 minutes, got my car the next morning. it was the fastest car purchase i've ever seen, and it was the fastest my friend has ever seen as well. 15 minutes in the dealership and it was sealed.
tim even called back that night, and asked if i had sealed the deal. i said "yup." he was like "wow...i can't believe it...*pauses for a minute* tell you what, if you can nullify the deal, i can give it to you for *around* $35,000." knowing that he probably couldn't offer it to me any less, i said "sorry i'll pass. i'm sticking with riverside."
i highly recommend riverside. it's a bit of a trip for a good number of us, but the owner was probably the most down to earth dealership owner around.
