Last sample showing some bearing wear. We're thinking it's a combination of high temps, high revs (7500+) and lower pressures from the higher G-forces the car is producing this year on stickier wider tires.

Ignore the mileage intervals on the car; I just guess when I send them in. The mileage on each run IS accurate.

So we are implementing a few fixes.

1) Longer 4th gear in the car. This will help to reduce those high revs as it'll position the car better gearing wise without having to push it to 7500+ in situations.

2) Trying a run of thicker AMSoil 15w50.

It has evolved from my daily driver, to a weekend DE car to a stripped track car! Some accomplishments include:

2010 Overview:
15 NASA TT events. Competed in 3 different regions in 3 different classes.
  • 11 wins in 3 different classes - TTB, TTA, TTS
  • 4 track records
  • 1 Regional Championship --> NASA Midwest TTA
  • Competed in GRM UTCC (GrassRoots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge) at VIR

2009 Overview:
  • 8 consecutive wins in NASA TTB
  • 3 track records in NASA TTB
  • 2nd place Redline Time Attack Street AWD - Joliet

Goals for 2011:
  • NASA TTA National Champion

Working on a little extra ducting on the bumper. I'll try to get some pics up.

1) Routing additional air towards the intake
2) Trying to force more air through the oil cooler instead of having it go around (around the outside closer to the bumper; big gap).

Updated the blog with some background on the oil changes for this year. It's nothing I haven't documented here in the thread, but still a good synopsis:

Prepping for Nationals. That means maintenance time. Mainly fluids and brakes.

I could tell when I was pouring the old oil into a container that it was thicker than what I'm used to. This was the first time I've drained the 15w50. I ran it 2 days; pulled a small sample; then ran it 2 more days - so it had 4 days; 2 full weekends at Mid Ohio on it.

Dropping in a fresh batch of AMSOIL 15w50 here:

^^ As I just mentioned, we pulled a small sample of the 15w50 and sent it in to see if bearing wear had improved. And it did. So we're sticking with the thicker stuff.

Here's the oil analysis report from after 2 days with the 15w50. About the last 2 sentences in the comments; no idea what the dude is talking about with 20hrs and such.

Everyone know I run AMSOIL in the Evo. I also run it in my DD / Tow Truck and the wife's Honda. So yeah, I've got quite the stockpile every spring!

Changed the truck oil last night with 5w30 AMSOIL Synthetic. I always end up making a mess; this thing just holds so much damn oil - near 7 quarts! Well that, and I've only changed it like 3 times I think, but even my former '04 Titan was the same way. Messy...

The truck wasn't really due, mileage wise it could have waited until closer to winter but I figured what the hell. The dipstick looked pretty dark and I had the supply.

NASA National Championships Sept 8-11 @ Mid Ohio

Loaded up and ready to rock. Left the rain/street tires on given the forecast. I figure my first session on Thursday isn't until like 11am, so I have plenty of time to (happily) switch to Hoosiers. BUT, if it's wet, I need to throwdown an official lap to start working the grid strategy. My group consists of my class (TTA) and the 3 classes above me, TTS, TTU, & TTR respectively. Should be around 30-35 of us.

If you'd like to stay updated, I'll be tweeting as much as I can with relavant information starting Wed when I leave work to head the 450 miles to the famous Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. And hopefully nightly updates to the blog. Info is below...
