Porsche 996tt Reflash: Results so far...

Just in case anyone is interested, I'm currently custom tuning a Porsche 996 twin turbo with our up and running Porsche reflashing system. This system allows the user to toggle back and forth between two fully discrete maps by just plugging a switching device in the OBD-II port and pressing a button. Below is the dyno graph comparing stock to what we have done so far. There is still a knock event right around 4800rpm that I'm in the process working out. Once, fixed, it should fill in that dip and perhaps make a solid 370-375whp on 91oct.

Stock vs remapping WHP and AFR:

As for torque gains, check this comparison graph out out:

Still more work to go on the pump gas map. Then comes race gas mapping. Geez.. these things are amazing.

More later...

Cheers.

Nice numbers... Are you using "colder range" spark plugs? Running the stock exhaust? Stock wires, etc...

I'm going to need a 911

You can get a 2001 for around "only" 70 G's.

100% stock. No hardware changes whatsoever. Although I'm going to replace the BOVs soon just to see if the stock ones are leaking. Still got some more mapping work to do first though...

Hey Shiv, why are 966tt exhaust so freakin' much? Like 2 or 3 thousand? Is there something about German 100 cell metal catalysts or is it just because they can since it's a $100,000 car.

Porsche stuff is expensive because not a lot are sold and even fewer mod their cars. Second look at a 996 exhaust system and see how crazy it is to even fit it up especially the TT exhaust.

I never found the logic either. I guess it seems if you can afford a 100k porsche you can squander 2k on catback exhaust and another 2k for an engine chip/reflash. You would think for 2k you could at least get a custom tune.

Baffling that the stock tune would leave 100 ft-lb on the table in the midrange

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, the midrange torque is to die for. I have a buddy here in NM that has a 996tt and the performance of that thing is unreal. I haven't ridden in it since track season ended, but it was ungodly then. I have trouble imagining what it is like now -- he had 550+ torque after his last tune.

They are a handful to drive though. He only gets me by about 4 seconds on a 2:00 road course.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.

Also, I have seen a few tests where modified exhausts on 993 and 996 turbo cars have lost horsepower compared to stock...

so are you going to sell your C2 now or are you still going to turbo it?

Hmm... I dunno. I haven't driven my 911 for nearly a month (since the transmission was taken apart for rebuild). Since then, I've been pimping it up in Lotuses and 996 Turbos. Memory has it that I still enjoy driving the c2 more than them. It kinda falls in right between them as far as driver involvement, response, nimbleness, etc,. goes.

The Turbo gives up some tossability in favor of ridiculous amounts of grip, power and power... and power. It's the ultimate GT. The Lotus, on the other hand, is pure sports. Unfortunately, it is gutless, boring and needlessly noisy and uncomfortable unless you are driving it at 10/10ths-- at which point it all pays off. The more I drive it, the less I could see myself owning one one day. Maybe I'm getting old and lame. On the other hand, I could easily see myself living with a 996tt for the rest of my life, as an only car, and never falling out of love with it. Unfortunately, they are kind of expensive

The c2 strikes a real nice compromise between the two. Kinda takes the best of both cars and packages it into something that you can beat the tar out on back roads and still drive 500 miles at a stretch. IMHO, its the better daily driver. Kinda like the EVO in that respect. Just not as forgiving. Don't ask my how I know!

-shiv

PS. Does anyone know of any other tuning shop that actually does custom dyno tuning on Porsches? By custom, I mean really custom. All the other shops I've researched are just flash loading stations that reflash the ECUs with baseline ROM files (from GIAC, APR, etc,.) and nothing more. We can't possibly be the only one doing it right, can we?
