Tales From the Dyno 5/04/06: Ultimate pump gas power

Leave it to an EVO IX to put down the numbers when it comes to pump gas. Viet drove up from LA for us to install the following parts on his brand new Evo IX. Interestingly enough, he purchased the following parts even before he purchased his car

Vishnu Stg 2 turbo package with 3071 turbo
HKS 280 exhaust cam with Vishnu cam gear (set at -2)
AMS fmic
Forge BOV
Full Std exhaust with test pipe
Custom tuned Reflash

As tested on 91oct...

WHP and Torque:

Boost and AFR:

This is essentially the same exact set-up we used in Graham Rahal's car a couple of weeks ago in Ohio (it put down 390whp on 93oct on and AWD Dynapack)

Boost response, on the road, is exceptional for a turbo like this. Stomp on the gas in 3rd gear at 3000rpm and you will see 22psi by 4000rpm. Lug it from 2000rpm in 5th gear (if you really must) and you'll see 22psi by 3750rpm.

The car also looks 100% stock under the hood. Only a keen eye will be able to tell that is is modified. Even the BOV and Tial wastegate is hard to see. Idle is also stock-like smooth despite the larger injectors and 280 exhaust cam. Gotta llove Mivec. Pretty cool for a 2.0 liter car making more power to the wheels than a Porsche 996tt

Off to St Louis...

Cheers,
Shiv

I'm sure anyone can answer this.. What does an evo 8 normally put down on the DD dyno with a stage 2 package?

Shiv's past shop car put down 350 whp on 91 oct with a similar set-up. Still impressive though and I think Shiv's shop car either had a factory freak 3071 turbo or the car was a freak. On 91 oct a 3037 stage 2 will put done similar numbers but will own a 3071 on better fuel. Expect about 370 whp at best on race fuel with a 3071 and about 390-420 whp with a 3037/3076 set-up.

So the lack of a more aggressive intake cam on this setup is what is probably holding this one back?

I'm confused. This doesn't seem that impressive. I would think the car should be making over 350 hp and 300ft/lbs with this setup. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Makes a lot more torque than the stock 9 turbo...Is the lag noticable? Is the MIVEC helping spool the turbo up any you think, or would you see similar lag on an EVO 8?

Doesn't seem to make any more torque with the same mods.

remember this is using crappy california pump 91 on a true daily driver. this is meant to be a sleeper setup that won't end up killing the engine, clutch or anything else. very conservative only boosting to 22psi. oh yeah, the xede hasn't been installed yet - it's still in the glovebox.

you can't tell it's modded until you drive it. pop the hood and you won't see anything. listen, and you won't be able to hear anything. there's no lag whatsoever - spools crazy quick. on the way home, the car averaged 24mpg!!!

i sat in that car and it was bad ***. im very impressed with the 9s on pump gas, and in conjunction with the 3071, you have a perfect daily driver. That looks, sounds and appears stock under the engine bay, yet maes more wheel hp than a 2004 911 twin turbo or a c5 z06.

race gas plus a properly tuned xede would probably yield some additional surprises. what about boosting a little more than 22psi? who knows what lies ahead for this 4 month old daily-driven grocery-getter.

Good power from a ultra conservative tune.
