Cam gear install.. Timing belt tensioner tool?

I'm going to look into putting these in this coming weekend. Do the cam gears come with this tool to release the tensioner? Where can I get one for the job? I want to be fully prepared.

Here is a thread that should help:

I'll look for more but that should work. Call SPX tomorrow. I wish I would have done mine myself. I was overcharged and they almost screwed up my gears.

You can get one from OTC where I believe everyone's getting them. The tool itself appears to be made by Miller Tools, as it has a stamp on it. When you call it may help to give them the direct part number they have in their database. This is directly from my receipt.

MLR-MD-998738 (Tensioner, Auto Installation) $8.29

SPX OTC - 1-800-533-5338

The guy from smogrunner's link said it costs $34 from OTC and you're saying it costs $8.29 so which is correct? big difference.

I know... I used that same reference when I was searching for the tool also.
I have the receipt in front of me and that's what I was billed as a regular call in customer. I also got a tensioner pulley tool in case I ever need to change the belt I can loosen and tighten the pulley for $17.47. So, I got 2 tools shipped for about $35.00. The tensioner pulley tool in case anyone needs it is, MLR-MD998767.

The tool everyone is getting to just swap gears is MLR-MD-998738. There have also been a few that have made their own tool with an 8mmx1.25mm threaded rod like BadBoyBeltran. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ight=cam+gears

Here's an excellent how-to guide. Just skip the cam swap sections if you're not doing cams.

No not an extra tool, another tool. It's a tool for the tensioner pulley that fits on to a 3/8" drive. It's got 2 stubs sticking out that slips into the pulley that allows you to hold it while you use a wrench to loosen or tighten the locking nut. Some get away with using needlenose pliers, In this case the tool was inexpensive and preferred to just get one.

tool

After weeks of debating and waiting for spx-otc to get the "tool" in. I went to a local bolt shop and bought a 36" peice of threaed rod and 2 nuts. Worked great!!!!! get the 8 x 1.25 and 2 nuts. thread in by hand until you feel tension. Then use a wrench non-open-end prefered. Then give it a 1/5 turn every 5 sec. go until it stops. for $3 I had the tool. Same day. No shipping. I just put it with my exhaust parts box with my oem pipes and put it in the attic.

DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE TOOL.

Oh, the difference in the prices, the MLR..... $8 tool is the chrysler version and the md-... $40 is the Mitsu version. You pay $32 for the sticker on the bag.......hmmmmm buy the mlr... $8 version.

Just my $.02
