50/50 with the AEM methanol injection kit or not?

sup guys,
i want to run 50/50 mix on my IX and was wondering if anyone had issuses with it? i have been doing some reasearch and didnt really get help! basically most peaple recomend to go 100% methanol for maximum performance, but in my case i am not really aiming for the maximum performance as much as i am for cooling the motor down. it does get up to 115 degres in the summer and thats why i choose to go with the 50/50 mix to get the best of both world raise my octane and keep my motor at a lower temp.. plus the CA **** gas doesnt help eaither . ill be buying the newest AEM methanol injection kit with the new design pump!

have anyone had problem with this setup? and does it have any side effacts?

my car is tuned right now for my specific mods tbe, boost controoler, fuel pump and an intake, if i install the methanol kit do i have to get a retune? or can i just use it with my current tune?

please keep in mind that my goal is to make the engine run cooler just to make it realiable!

thank you.

I say run 50/50. Cheaper, thicker, non-flamable, tune to ~11.8 AFR, add 4-5°*of timing over your pump gas tune and you're good to go.

have anyone had problem with this setup?

I'm in CA and I've run the AEM meth kit 50/50 since it came out almost two years ago. No problems.

and does it have any side effects? If you don't have a fail safe installed the side effects can be brutal. Recommend using the search function to get smart on the pros and cons of running meth. Don't recommend running 100% meth with the AEM kit. Instructions with the kit state that the kit is not built to run 100% meth because it is too corrosive and may damage the pump seals. The AEM kit is designed to run up to 50/50 mix.

my car is tuned right now for my specific mods tbe, boost controoler, fuel pump and an intake, if i install the methanol kit do i have to get a retune? Yes. It is recommended you have your car tuned after installing this kit.

or can i just use it with my current tune? Not recommended

so running 50/50 with my current tune is bad?
because i have people telling me that it should'nt be bad, since its basically like putting higher octane in my car! i know i am not gaining the HP i should be getting, but is it safe on my current tune?

When at WOT your ecu goes into open loop and puts a set amount of fuel in per amount of air. If you spray in extra on top of that, guess what happens? It goes rich. How rich depends on how big your nozzle(s) are. This in and of itself is not aweful, but running extremely rich can hinder performance. Best to run a very light mixture of methanol with mostly water (or just straight water) until you actually get re-tuned for this setup.

With all that said, the AEM kit is really a good basic kit, but I would never ever recommend it to anyone. It is on-par with the SMC kit, in that they are progressive pump kits w/o any failsafe. I already linked you to one of the stickies at the top of this page, but there's another one with my name on it you should read to see why you really really really really really really really want to have a failsafe on your meth kit.

Retune is needed very much to truly get the gains.

just run 50/50, don't retune, and enjoy the extra cooling and octane. everybody is so dramatic about absolutely having to retune in order to have any gains. believe me, when it get's to be 100 degrees outside this summer you'll be very glad you have a water/meth kit... even if you aren't tuned for it.

You do still need to tune for water/alcohol injection to get the best out of your system. You have to understand that most of our Evos that are on pump gas are tuned on the rich side and have conservative timing advance. When you introduce water/alcohol injection chances are your car will slow down and if the car is on the rich side you may even may get some sputter through out the RPM range. Lean out the AFR and add some timing and your car will love the water/alcohol injection. That's really taking advantage of the extra cooling and octane.

Does going from 100% meth to 50/50 require a re-tune?

This is not correct. The newer AEM pump supports 100% meth. They recommend 50/50 for fire safety and liability reasons.

i'm pretty sure all the water/meth companies have pumps that can hold up to 100% meth but none of them recommend it which is totally understandable imo. anyone that does must have pretty good product liability insurance.

yeah i agree. best results come from tuning but you do not absolutely need to tune in order to see an increase in power. stock tune uses knock feedback so if the ecu sees knock it reduces timing. well if it doesn't see knock then it won't pull timing. yes best case scenario is less fuel and more timing but that shouldn't keep someone from using it in the mean time. if you're worried about being too rich then run less meth. easy enough.

I learned many years ago when I first started using water/alcohol injection on my Talon that even when I used the smallest jet on a untuned (for water/alcohol injection) set up, my car would run slower in the 1/4 mile. The rich A/F ratio along with the extra water/alcohol injected reduced the efficiency in the combustion chamber. I even tried it again when I first installed my water/alcohol injection on my flashed 91 octane tune just to see if I would run quicker in 100 degree weather at the Street Legal Drags in Fontana. I played with different jet sizes and even using the smallest jet, I ran two tenths slower and lost almost 3 MPH on my trap speed.

Sorry man, I see your logic but I just speak from my experience of the last 10 years with water/alcohol injection and from other people who have run water/alcohol injection. The only time I would see it beneficial to run water/alcohol injection on a untuned engine would be if the car was running very lean or maybe very low octane gas. The water/alcohol then would help the engine.
