Exclamation Report on STAGE II

Got home 20:30 hours. Total mileage on Stinky (2003 OZ) from 5PM, yesterday = 875 Miles... Current Milleage 18K+
Jeff, I can't believe we did that in torrential rain on 3 hours sleep! Bet most of the Rim drivers are saying the same thing to each other right now... if they're coherent.

Today's event RoXXoReD... ...and the saga continues...

CAL SLAM's new Single SLAMmers = Most Bodacious!
CAL SLAM's veterans = Legendary!

Don't wanna hate but,: Subies arrived in droves, while Mitsu Enthusiasts were pretty scarce! My opinion is that the Lancer owners who showed today got more guts, excitement and individuality in their little finger that then whole Subie movement PLUS all the SoCal Lancer/Evo Drivers who p1ssed away their Saturday morning instead of turning out to show support and representin' with pride. As Jeff put it in the poll - You suck! We got your backs, anyway, though. It's all good.

Met Rhys Millen (RMR) and Rob Tallini (RRM) for the first time. Just as cool in person as they are in cyberspace (and on our rydes), if not cooler. Although David and Stephen of WORKSRALLY were chilly & wet, their Evo was hotter than SCCA Chili! HKS Evo VIII was mind-numbing.

Oh yeah, HappEvo Birthday, Shaun!
Thanks for the photo record, Karlen!
Troie, yeah, you got me, this time... I owe ya!

I also met Pierre Gagnon, President of Motors NA, who has pledged corporate support and recognition of CAL SLAM STAGE III aka "CAL SLAM E-X", to be held in NorCal, Summer 2003. His son asked me how many mods on Stinky... I haven't even finished posting them in the registry...

So, alls I gotta say is: Are your ready, Bay Area?

Hey guys, I just got back from the awards banquet. We would like to thank all of those who worked Rim despite the harsh weather (top or mountain + rain + hail + wind + cold = ). At the awards ceremony, almost every team that made a speech included a thank you for all the workers who braved the weather for their benefit. We have been awarded with certificates (see pic below), which Kara has in her posession and might be coordinating with Stew to get them signed and maybe mailed out to the Cal Slam workers. I want to thank Stew for coordinating the club affiliation for this event, and hopefully we will have a more sunny event next year.

Normally, the Rim gets warm Summer weather, but this weekend was not so. We workers had to get there early and set up banners and coordinate parking and work assignments, and the long hours was hard on us. Here's a pic of my car's staff parking pass after the 2 day event.

And rhyzin, I think you were early and missed us at Spunky. Most of us arrived at the bottom at 12:30 and had to hike the 3 miles into the stage since even some 4x4s were not making it up. The cars were scheduled to go by around 3, but were delayed an hour and then an additional 2 hours because they weren't finishing the previous stages in time. Most of us gave up at 4:00 and missed it ourselves, but I'm glad because I think some of us were close to getting hypothermia or something (it took half of the 3 mile hike back to get feeling back to our legs, feet, hands, etc.)

It was pretty fun, a lot of nice cars and great time with calslam members. I was surprised at the few privatly owned evo's that were there. I was expecting to see a lot more. Cal Slam 3 can't wait.

Taken from SoCalDSM which got it from specialstage.com

----------------
Warning : Rant about to unfold!
And the big winners are:

California Highway Patrol
Antelope Valley Towing Services (at least 3 companies)
Antelope Valley local government

So what's up with this?
Drive out to the spectator stage at Spunky Canyon - awesome spot on
any other day but today. It was raining heavily all morning so no
cars were able to get up the dirt road to the parking area for the
stage. When I arrived at 2.30pm there were cars all over. Parked in
the dirt turnout, the dirt at the sides of the road - everywhere. At
least 200 vehicles! I find my spot - display my Adventure Pass.
So set off walking into the stage - the parking area is 2.7 miles off
the highway - the stage is another 2 past that. With on/off rain the
walk is not too bad - get a ride in a pick up truck for most of the
way (Thanks guys!).

The Saturday restart was delayed until 1pm so first car was expected
by us at around 3.50pm. I arrive at the spectator areaat 3.30pm, told
we have about a 20 minute wait. Cool! Find my spot, settle down and
wait. And here comes Mother Nature once more. Rain coming sideways,
freezing cold - problems on Del Sur stage delaying start of Leona -
our spectator stage!
After and hour and a half I was so numb I had to leave, along with
many others! (Love rallying but there had already been a Hypothermia
case the night before so I didn't want to become a statistic!)

Set off walking back down the road - again get truck ride back to
highway! (Thanks again, other guys!!)
Arriving back at the road it looks very empty - seems like most folks
had given up and headed off! Or so I thought.

Along comes Mr.CHP, and his tow trucks!!!!!

I walk back to my car to find it being raised up onto a tow truck!
WTF!! According to the driver, all the cars parked at the side of the
road were parked illegally, and making it dangerous on the road!
We were all parked on the outside of the white line, on dirt, off the
road - but Mr Plod decided he wanted some Brownie points from his
Captain!

Tow Truck guy (with a WRX on the flatbed and my car on the hitch)
said that he had to take it unless I paid $100 RIGHT NOW!!! What am I
to do - it's 16 miles to Palmdale, it's freezing and pissing with
rain! I pay! While sat in his truck with him writing out the receipt
along comes his colleague in another tow truck. Colleague rolls down
window and comments "It's like Christmas, man!" then drives off.
*****!

At the same time, WRX owner returns to find his car on the back. He's
pissed because the car had been dragged onto the flatbed still in
gear and he's worried his diffs may be screwed! He pays.
I check out my car and notice that the brainiac tow truck driver was
minutes away from towing my front wheel drive CRX with the rear
raised and the car in gear. What a ****!

This all happened today about 2 hours ago. What a load of BS. The CHP
are fully aware that the rally was going on. Every car I saw had an
Adventure Pass on the mirror - and I'm sure no-one was aware that we
were illegally parked. It appears that an overzealous Officer decide
to f**k up everyone's day by leaving them stranded in the middle of
nowhere, with no car in the pouring rain. The tow truck drivers all
made their commission and we got reamed!

I was lucky that I got a ride out of the stage, that I was not 3
minutes later and that I could get out of the rain. I feel very sorry
for the poor sods who were stuck up on the stage waiting to watch the
action while they were getting screwed by the local law enforcement.
I wish I'd had a van so I could wait for them, to get them back to
Palmdale - even though they couldn't their cars back til Monday! (Per
the driver!) And if towing damages AWD cars - there were a hundred
subies there that are going to have some issues with the tow yards.

I'm sure folks have parked there before without trouble, but CHP
chose today to be ******!
There was plenty of room for cars to drive by in both directions, no
cars were in the way - I don't understand!

So, I'm home now. Dryer, warmer, poorer! Didn't get to see any rally
cars in action but drooled over plenty in Parc Expose (an excellent
display by the way!) And I got Nicky Grist to sign my 1/18th scale
Focus and pose for a pic!
And best of all - the tow truck hitch broke while he was trying to
raise my car!!

well i actually got to see a couple of drivers run spunky. the neon srt-4 broke his drive shaft and had to get off the road. we kinda talked to the driver and codriver and they were pretty pissed. all the 2wd cars did crappy around the 3 turns up the hill as the 4wd cars just flew by (the evos and wrx's) i had two pairs of jeans on, 2 shirts, a thermal, and a water resistant jacket on. i came back to my car 4x heavier from all the water soak. and i'm sitting here sore from the walk. well it was an experience. and that truck where his passenger side wheel assembly broke off at the entrance from the stage entrance. crazy. there was also an evo 6 that was stuck for a little while at the slushy mud near the entrance too. well it was an experience.

Yeah, they were towing all the cars that were parked over the white line on the street at the bottom of the trail. Apparently, the CEO of Mitsu had an Evo8 that was towed and damaged in towing

oh yeah, the guy told me that when i got to the bottom. my car was okay, but my girl was in the car anyways. it got too cold for her. we got a ride back from the spectator area from this guy with a raised truck. it just so happens he off roads so he took the ride back hella fast. when we hit that big *** puddle i got mud splashed in my face. the driver was a crazy ***... but it was fun.

there were a lot of nice scoobies (subarus) there, but me and my friends were mostly gawking at the stock evo 6. we mostly like the 6 over the 7 or 8. did anyone get footage from any of the stages? one of the marshals at the entrance said that my video cam probably wouldn't make it in the rain and cold, so i left it. i brought 3 blank tapes and didn't even get 10 mins worth of shots. pretty disappointed.

it also seemed like the chp was justt going after the nicer cars of the batch (wrx's, evo 8) because i didn;t see any of the any types of cars tehre being towed or cops by them cept for the nicer wrx's and the evos
