Oh come on now--it is commonly understood that Evos perform very well in drag racing too.

I know that the track conditions at the Q suck, and unless you are running DRs or slicks you aren't going to hook. Are any of you Evo owners running DRs?

I haven't really seen anyone use DR before there. I'm personally scared to use DR for dragging.

Just upgrade your axles.

I've run at the Q twice, first time with Toyo RA-1 R compounds which were nearly completely bald. Very grippy compared to any normal street tire, but probably a small step below drag radials or Hoosiers. The second time, I was riding on full tread Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D snow tires -- very soft compound, good grip at the actual point of contact, but heavily siped and with a lot of tread flex.

On either set of tires, I was spinning all 4 tires off the line, and my 60' times were nearly identical -- 1.799 on the Toyos, 1.773 on the snow tires. The 0.026 second difference could be explained by the fact that for the second visit, I ran 100 octane gasoline with an appropriate ECU map -- good for probably 20 horsepower compared to the 91 octane map.

I've also got some other upgrades which should help for a good launch, like my ACT race clutch and Quaife front LSD.

Has anybody here gotten an Evo to do a 60' in under 1.7 seconds at the Q? I have a set of 285/30R18 autocross Hoosiers which might do the trick in my car, but I'm not sure I'm a good enough drag racer to manage it.

I'd like to suggest you get some MT ET Street Radials. They are one of the best DRs on the market, and you should have zero problems hooking at the Q.

I didn't realize you could run different LSD up front then what is in the rear.

P.S. Autocrossing/road racing tires are not the best for drag racing--they tend to have stiffer sidewalls and in drag racing you want the sidewalls to flex.

To quote my signature (emphasis added):

Good luck, godspeed, and may all of your acceleration be lateral...
I'm basically an autocross guy who dabbles in drag racing, so I don't see any drag radials in my future.

But thanks for the info, maybe it will help somebody else.

I tuned a friend's Evo IX with what my buddies call the "Alan-Tune" last night to get him ready for the auto-x this Saturday....lets just say that the results are more then exceptional...

This car is running a peak of 23lbs of boost tapering to 17lbs @ 7500rpms with an AFR of ~11.2 @ WOT (all monitored with the Zeitronix WB w/3.5bar Map Sensor)

The Mods are as follow:

Custom road tune to include MIVEC mapping
K&N Drop-In Filter
Dejon Tool Intake pipe
Dejon Tool MBC
Agency Power BOV
AMS Intercooler w/Nisei piping
Custom gasket matched Porting job on the exhaust manifold & hotside
Invidia o2 housing
Turbo XS 3in TBE (Catless)
Walbro 255lph pump

What do you guys think about these gains?!

Alain: I received the Hallman MBC kit today. Do you know if you'll have time tomorrow or Sunday to help me do the install/tuning? Thanks!

Here is another tune that I did on Wed night....Rob's Evo IX...

This was on 91oct with peak of 22lbs of boost tapering to 16lbs @ 7500rpms with an AFR of ~11.5 @ WOT (all monitored with the Zeitronix WB w/3.5bar Map Sensor)

The Mods are as follow:

Custom road tune to include JDM RS MIVEC mapping
Muller 2.3l Stroker
Dejon Tool MBC
GSC 1st Gen 280 cams
Denso 660cc injectors
Injen Lower intercooler pipe
XS Power Downpipe/RRE Highflow Cat/Fujitsubo Cat Back
Walbro 255lph pump

Everything else is Stock!!! This was just to get a baseline for the car...testpipe, o2 housing, porting, intake, GM solenoid for ECU based control, and some other bolt on are on the way to extract all the power of this beast...more to come

This car pulls like a fright train down low....stock turbo + 2.3L = Lots of torque!!! BTW...I think the stock turbo is here to stay for a while

^ Why is the boost tapering off so much? He is losing a lot of power top end.
