Bad Gasoline in Phx?

Hey guys, just wanted to pass on some info... I have posted this on AZAWD.ORG, but thought i post it here as well... this is just to pass on the info based on our experience... take it for what it's worht

Some of the Evo guys are having problem with the current gasoline blends on the market (Shell in particular); if your car is running kinda ****ty, turn your boost level down. We are going to try some other brands of gas to see if the same thing happens. We have retuned a couple of them today and they are pulling timing like crazy... so all u guys running aggresive maps, pls becareful

I know the Scoobies are even more sensitive to the octane level; so keep an eye out while your driving. Turn down the boost if you have to.

Those who have been living here long enough knows that gas sucks a$$ in the valley

Be safe.

Nice post... definitely let us know what you find out about the other brands. There were some "rumors" that shell was just shipping its 93 octane over here and not using a 91 blend... sounded like bs then, sounds even more like it now

Shell used to be good, but now that most of the stations are bought out by Circle-K, perhaps this has changed things a bit.

So far on the "not so good" list:
- Albertson's gas
- Mobile
- Chevron (from previous experience... that Techcron stuff doesn't help much)
- Shell

Gas to be tested next:
- QT
- 76 station
- Texaco

To give you an idea how bad pump gas is right now. Our mechanic's Evo 8 MR was pushing 245whp when we strapped it on the dyno last night (air filter, JIC ex-manifold, TBE); we then drained the gas and put Sonoco GT 104 in there... it jumped to 275whp & 275tqe; after we finished tuning it on 104, it ended up at 312whp/312tqe. That's almost 70 whp gained from pump gas to race gas - freaking amazing... so by this example, u know the pump gas is pulling timing like crazy.

BTW, anybody going to Firebird Raceway this friday night? We'll see you guys there.

cheers.

I know, I just got my car tuned for a 91 map at mynes. My car barely made 280 with TBE, MBC, 272's, and so on. I hate phx gas. Looks like its back to 101 of me.

Get an injection kit and run any gas you want - even 87 octane!!

Thanks for the heads up Mike.
I think you're pretty much hit all the major brands on the 'not-good' list. I'll be interested in reading about 76 though because I've always thought it was some of the best.

Mike, Engineer has the VIII MR with no cams... he should hit 330 or more with cams... can't compare that to your IX

cheers.

I hope you guys try Costco gas sometime in the future. I ran that most of the summer and will start again now that the Gilbert Costco has a gas station.

Good thread. Funny thing is I have noticed the same thing on my suby lately. Even with the "cooler" temp., car still feels it's pulling timing. BTW I used Chevron all the time. After reading this thread, I will try a different brand and see what happenes. Mobil being first on the list.

Ive heard the same thing...A friend of mine was told that his evo would only be tuned if it was runnying shell 91. If it wasnt then the tech would not even tune it...anyone ever heard of this?
