A 29-year-old man driving the car was speeding when he lost control and crashed into the center divider, the CHP reported.
The right-rear passenger, a 28-year-old woman, died, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. She has been identified as Angela Ainslie.
Ainslie, who lived just east of Balboa Park in the 1700 block of Fern Street, died at the scene of the crash, which left the driver, 29-year-old James Balmer, of San Diego, and two other occupants of the sedan injured.
Balmer was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of "moderate to major" trauma, CHP public information Officer Brad Baehr said.
It was unclear if Balmer will face criminal charges in the crash accident.

The guy who was driving is the brother of a co-worker of mine here in Portland. I understand many of you are angry he was speeding, but you don't really know the details and all the name-calling isn't justified even if you have never gone in excess of the speed limit ever in your life. It was dumb and it's a tragedy. And for all of you wishing he gets jail time...it's not going to happen. He's on life-support with minimal brain function, with no real hope of ever getting off of it.
Speeding on freeways kills. People aren't always morons who do it, sometimes they just make mistakes and don't think anything bad will happen. This guy had a rough go of it in his life and had just recently turned his life around. I feel very said for the family of the girl who died and my co-workers family also. Be safe.
